thats kind of a load of shit. the wealthiest people in the world 2 centuries ago probably still had it better than the bottom 25% even though they didn't have a honda civic. Come on. quality of life is not determined by a few material possessions. you think kings had to worry about getting kicked out of their house, or feeding their kids, or not getting an education? fuck no. they still lived like kings, they just didnt have air conditioning or a honda civic. Just because a poor person can buy fish or avocado out of season (they still probably cant because those things are expensive anyway) doesent mean they are doing better than oligarch in 1850.

on the same topic, with a counter that is usually made, it it also kind of a load of crap to say "well quality of life is higher than it ever has been" (in the context of comparing it to the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s)...just because its technically better to be poor now than it was to be poor in the 30s, in no way justifies the out of control distribution of wealth/wealth gap that is widening, and socio economic conditions that are worsening for the lower class.

    Let's have a thought experiment.

You're 18, and you just took the SAT and placed right at the peak of the bell curve. This gets you into your regional state school. You dream of being a mechanical engineer and working for NASA. Your parents are average income earners, so you're not getting any tuition help, and only a couple grand in scholarships because you're right at the peak of the average.

Surely you can see how impossibly stacked the deck is against you in that scenario? You might really want to build spaceships, but your intelligence is average, and you definitely didn't go to MIT, so you're stuck proofing blueprints at cessna for $40k a year if you're lucky.

I kept throwing them out early on because I thought they were trash, and they're likely made with plastic that has lead in it somehow or another lol. Oh man they yelled at me. So I said, "I will buy you a brand new set of modern plastic storage containers!"

Nope, that did not go over well.

the surge in housing nationwide, inflation, and lack of universal health care has seen to it that you cannot fund a mideval peasent life on 10 hours or work a week (assuming minimum wage), if it includes a hut, clothing and medical care haha

ok but we need to get a reality check that "todays kids" didnt choose to enter an economy built around rampant consumerism and a throw it away mentality. Its no secret that quantity vs quality has been the name of the game for some time. So there is far less incentive to fix something, because its built cheaply to begin with. Thats not a choice of the youth, thats a mentality of the economy. So when you say "our" culture, your right, your culture of people in their 50s? maybe 60s? that have created this world that todays kids were thrust into.

And come on, thats a serious, no offense, boomer mentality to think that buying a coffee a few times a week is going to make or break your retirement account. Thats the kind of stupid headline CNN has when it tries to understand why gen x'ers are struggling. A $5 coffee here or a meal out there is not it. Its 30K/ year college, $400/ month health care premium, rents at $800+/month for a bed room because every home and apartment has been purchased by 3rd home owner boomers and corporations, and wages that have not kept up with worker productivity. Blaming the financial woes of the gen x and millenials on starbucks and door dash is like saying a business is failing because it buys too many pens and printer paper. those aren't the costs that really matter

I notice no mention of kids...or lack of .

I find it difficult to believe a semi skilled or skilled laborer will be able to have a fully funded retirement.

Even with 2 incomes and 3 kids, the rate of saving will be stupid low.

I really worry about this next generation.

    If you need to know.

Yes, no kids and retired. Way more money that I know what to do with after working 26 years at around $35/hr.

I'm worried about the way things are headed.

The funny part about this is that all your examples are material possessions or services. In order - housing, food, and education.

And the entire point is that these items are available in higher quality and to a much larger swath of the population than ever before. The children of, say, european kings 200 years ago had the food security equivalent for the time, yes, but they couldn't get beef as often as you get beef. They couldn't get mangos *at all*.

They may have had education security, for the time, but they never learned a thing about genetics. They may have had medical care, for the time, but no antibiotics or OTC allergy medicines.

It's not even close. In material terms, even the least privileged among us have better choices than the most privileged from previous centuries.

    Inequality doesn't matter. To review:
    https://youtu.be/7sJPZeSl-5M?t=178

It creates a lot of envy, but that's just misapplied thinking.

Give specifics. What conditions are worsening, exactly?
