I started out with a $149 brushed M12 impact, drill and oscillating tool when switching from Ryobi. I already had M18 Fuel 6 1/2” circular saw that I loved so I started to switch more tools over. Personally I started selling off tools I didn’t use to pay for the different to get more FUEL level tools. You don’t need Fuel level stuff, but the Fuel tools do have more features and a longer warranty. I’d say buy Fuel when it’s on sale as you need it.

 

This is tempinting...will that impact work for light duty automotive stuff?

How old are you?

The reason I ask is twofold, M12 are much lighter and when you hit 64 or so, makes a HUGE difference. Plus, cost, batteries, etc..........how long you will use them all factors with age.

I love my DeWalt 20V Max stuff and was a very early adopter...........it's now too late to go M18. The 20V max saws have been very good to me. Through a 6x12 beam yesterday...........

That said I now own more and and wider variety of M12. I love the platform.

If I started over at 40, I would go M18. But I have and love M12,and 20VMax

Not a shitty answer, important part of the equation. In my 30s so tool weight is not as big of a concern for me, though it's always a small factor. My understanding is brushed is lower quality than brushless but get somewhat lost when comparing the cost/utility/value of say m12 fuel vs m18 brushed. Also wondering if the comparison holds true across tools or if it varies by tool type how much the m12 vs M18 vs fuel of each vary in capability

 

12v V. 18v is mostly about run time, and (depending on the tool) a bit about power. I have both an M12 and M18 Fuel driver & hammer drill set; I bought the M12 for a very specific job, assuming it wouldn't be great for every day use, but because of the significant weight saving with a 4ah M12 battery over an M18, it's become my go-to. The M18 tools, especially with a big battery get heavy quickly, so unless you need that capacity, in most cases, I would say M12 is fine. Not everything need be Fuel, no, but it's their top-flight brushless line, and FWIW, I always try and buy the best I can afford, where it matters. If it's a tool that's going to get regular or professional use, I would spend the extra $$ for Fuel versions. As for deals... you're on your own. You folks down in North Mexico get wayyyyyy better deals than we in the Frozen North(TM) .

 

brushed vs brushless has to do with the efficiency, power and run time of the tool. Brushless tools can sometimes last longer in terms of useable life, although that depends on brand quality too.

Tools are tools, the investment really depends on the user and the job vs the value.

 

If you are considering the smaller m12 drivers, be sure to look at the m12 installation driver. It, with its offset and 90 degree heads get used more than any other driver for interior work. It also has a 3/8" drill head so it sort of does it all for small stuff. Perfect for installing cabinets or working on dishwashers where accessibility is more important than power. I have it and am glad I didn't get any other m12 drivers. That said, the clutch does give out pretty easily (highest setting is about right for a 3" drywall screw for affixing drywall, lower settings for cabinet hinges). This is all low torque, but that is on purpose. Higher than a 3" drywall screw requires you to use drill mode without a clutch. Also the top surface of the installation driver is very low profile, I just installed some casement window cranks with it and didn't have to even open the windows due to the offset head.

For working of fences or exterior, m18 surge for fasteners and the m18 hammer drill are irreplaceable and top-notch where power is important. These 3 drivers cover just about everything up to I'd say a 3/4" dia, 12" long lag screw into a too-small predrilled hole into a railroad tie, then you need an m18 impact driver or wrench to finish it off.

 

Love my m12 installation driver. My only complaint about it is the forward/reverse button on the top and not the traditional way on most drill/drivers. Takes some getting used to.

 

I started with all m12 fuel. I have since gotten everything in the M18 fuel. I still like using the m12 circ saw and the impact driver for certain projects, but found I’d rather have more power the m18 offers the majority of the time.

Nevermind, just wasn't working on my phone for whatever reason. Wife pulled the link on her phone and it went through, pretty stoked on having an impact wrench finally. The ratchet set is just icing

Batteries.

I pretty much don't buy (have plenty, don't use as much, etc) the small form factor M12 batteries anymore. Need more larger moar.

BTW the two generic 6 and 9Ah are still doing fine.

Hmm, I do need a new battery for my driver actually. I have a 4ah that's been dropped on and now sits crooked lol

 

Anyone have the M12 or M18 jobsite fan and use them for automotive? Looking to use it inside the car when doing dash work and such as well as underhood or anywhere else.
