I have a 2007 TRD Sport long bed Double cab. Recently the truck has began to shutter and shake when ever on the accelerator but stops when your not such as going down a hill. Ive heard that the culprit could be the carrier bearing but i am not sure if it is and how to diagnose. another thing it could be is internal transmission failure/ torque converter. let me know what you think it could be. thanks

Have the carrier bearing/u-joints ever been replaced? What’s the mileage?

Before you go all “worst case scenario”, breathe, then start small.

Get under the truck, grab the DS near the carrier bearing. Move it around. If there’s more than 1/4” of movement total, it’s bad. The u-joints are checked with the DS out of the truck. Check for being too loose and floppy, and play in the yokes by twisting the DS in opposite directions at each joint.

Before the sky starts falling, check the wear items.
You never mentioned the mileage? These items last about 100k miles on average, just so you know.

Put it in 4th gear. If the shudder goes away. It’s probably the Torque Converter.
I personally don’t think it is the converter. I’d suspect u-joint or worn carrier bearing first.
Even more so since you are lifted.

Agree with the others: Universal Joints or Carrier Bearing in that order especially considering the age of your truck. The best way to check it is with the drive shaft out of the truck. If you find one universal joint bad replace them all as the others aren't far behind.

Check out the u-joints sooner than later. A u-joint failure can be catastrophic at highway speeds.

Just talked to my dad who was the last owner who replaced the carrier bearing about 20k miles ago but said it could still be the problem since it was a cheap replacement and was prone to failure as well.
how many miles where on your truck when it went and what were the symptoms?

It started at around 189k. Got the rumble strip feeling at first then progressively got worse to a shudder. I replaced it at 218k and it's like a brand new tranny.

After replacing the carrier bearing and rebalancing the driveshaft, I solved the shutter by flushing the transmission fluid. Full flush at the dealer. Apparently it breaks down over time.

It only cost me the price of the converter $199 since I did all the labor.
