Ok, so how does the drive dog help you achieve 0 TIR along the length of the shaft when it's already in, what I assume, is a 0 TIR lathe chuck?

 

It can be done without but maybe if I left a little extra on the drive/chuck end to hold it, then just cut that extra length off and face it off after.
The bar is not always perfectly round to begin with but this one was within .001" remarkably.
Doing it this way just give me assurance.
I will flip it in the chuck and turn the other end, everything be perfect.

Precisely. That drive dog up against the chuck jaw is the driving force. I'll post a better picture shortly.
