Just got the RSI Load Bars in and hope to get them mounted this weekend

 

The jackery holder in the bed of the truck is pretty cool! did you make it yourself? Im going to do something similar.

 

Good spot! I was going to make it but then started researching battery trays. I bought it on Amazon, cut the extended tabs off the back and the front lip, drilled the holes required to match up to my molle panel and painted it with bed liner. The Jackery fits perfectly. To ensure it doesn’t jump off on off-road trails I use Velcro straps through the Jackery handle.

Nice setup! This is the exact setup I am going for as well color and all. Ordered the Prinsu cap rack same time as the cab, just waiting on the RSI Cap for another 4 months probably Really wish I had it now so my RTT did not hang off the back 16”…..

 

I thought these are made with SS? That shouldn't be rusting...

 

a misconception… stainLESS steel. Many factors at play. Personally being on the gulf I know I live in a harsh environment so I should maintain more frequently than others. Ymmv

 

Only low grade stainless will rust. That means these are not made as well as I thought. I live in the rust belt so this would be an issue for me too. I was just about to place an order for one too…

 

Again less of a chance BUT in any extreme environment rust is possible eventually. You live in the rust belt- well fuck that’s extreme so yes eventually (depending on care also). I live on the coast- also extreme. You live an an environment like we do, it is what it is.
Am I saying these are made the absolute best and indestructible… no, these are “mass” produced and as anything else has some faults whether by machine or ppl. All I’m saying let’s be realistic with expectations. I’m still happy with my purchase despite the minor issues here and there and maybe it’s because I bought a fiberglass new beforehand and the quantity of that made me hate it every time I looked at it. You got to find what you can live with and what you can’t (which it seems you have). Good luck with the other available options

 

Bump again for insulation question - we carry the dogs in the bed all the time and now that it’s heating up in our part of CA, has me very concerned. Would insulation panels inside help keep the heat OUT? Open to suggestion but would like not to have to spray something. Thank you!

 

I don’t think any amount of insulation is going to make the inside of a SmartCap tolerable. I would not put my animals back there even with air flow. The bed is a heat sink as well so you’d have to insulate that too. One of those 12v ACs might work though using the side window slider as the exhaust port.

 

I've seen guys do a white vinyl wrap on top of the SmartCap to help it not draw so much of the heat from the sun. Aside from that, you could try using insulation panels inside which could help but you'll want to make sure you insulate all sides. There are also thermometers you can get that monitor the temp and alert you when it's too hot back there through bluetooth.

 

This could be slightly off topic… but… has anyone removed and reinstalled the third brake light on the Smartcap.

Mine isn’t lighting… the brake lights on the truck are good, multimeter on the cable from the light should 4V.

RSI recommended checking the bulb itself. But the bolts keep spinning. And then I can’t re-tighten them either based on the housing design.

Found something out this weekend. The rails on the top of the smart cap taper towards the rear.

It is so slight you don't notice. I Made up some "L" brackets to put two 100W solar panels up to keep my camp battery charged (fridge, CPAP, led lighting, small fan).

I drilled with a "P" size drill (8.20 mm) and kept thinking that's odd. My screw-up was assuming rails were straight front to back. Nope, there is a taper.

The solution was to use some screw transfer punches to get the holes dead in the center.

Never measured mine. Mounting the Frontrunner rails was more distracting just tightening the myriad of nuts. I plan on adding a solar panel on mine too but will make it work with the channels in the rail instead of the topper channels.

 

@roundrocktom You have a picture/pictures of the finished product? Trying to figure out how i want to mount a panel and route wires into my RSI to power my bluetti.

There is a gap in the front of the bed, in case you don't want to cut a hole to pass the wiring.

Happy to report no wind noise from the panel up there.

Temporary Hardware, studs too long hence double washers under the nuts.

 

Anyone have issues running the frontrunner load bars with an RTT??
