Steve can usually crack off some good jokes on manufacturers. I sub to their channel and watch videos if they interest me.

For the newegg debacle, they figured out that newegg itself had sent the board to the manufacturer for repair of the cpu pins. Manufacturer said no can do, newegg got it back, slapped an open box sticker on it, and sold it to Steve. It was an interesting story. I didnt bother to watch the interview with newegg rep. Figured it would be all smoke up their asses. I gave up on them over a decade ago. Luckily have a microcenter nearby.

I've had the opposite, I've had Seagate drives fail out of no where. (Skyhawk), Switched to WD purple and haven't had any issues. I also am running 2 WD blacks, 1 WD blue and a WD black m.2 ssd without problems.

    Well... Blues.

I've seen several blues and greens fail never had a WD black fail though.

Too many bad Seagates of various varieties die on me personally and a Toshiba HDD that set me back.

Right now I have in my computer 1TB 840, 1TB 850, 2TB 860, two 970 NVMe Samsungs and then two 6TB WD Red Pro drives as my long term duplicate back ups.

I don't really trust any particular brand or model of hard drive be it solid state or otherwise but the higher end WD's have been in my experience more reliable than anything else when it comes to platter drives and Samsung with SSDs.

Guess I've always been lucky and never had any brand drive just completely fail. And even then only a couple start showing signs.

Though funny enough a Hitachi 3tb drive that's 10ish years old just gave up on me. Started getting tons of reallocated sector errors. No lost data lucky....which granted the data on it is all stuff I don't care if it's lost forever.

But was enough to finally get me to upgrade to another 14tb drive and get rid of the couple remaining 3tb drives still in use.

Those old drives (couple 3tb and 2tb drives) are now paired into simple raid1 configs. Even if they die they have well outlasted their expected lifespans

I handle warranty replacements at work for bad hard drives. We typically buy wd black most often if we can get the sizes we need. We usually buy exos or iron wolf for the higher capacities. I have had a lot of exos plopped on my desk with post it notes indicating it is bad. I dont have exact numbers, but i know drive for drive, we have a lit more wd than we do seagate. But i see probably around the same amount of drives from each manufacturer for replacements.

For high capacity drives i bought the easystore drives from best buy when on sale. I shucked them and put them in my server on raid6. They are only 5400rpm, but as a media server 7200 wouldnt do me any good, only more power and more heat.

Finally got my new toy done.
Started collecting parts the end of January.

    Nothing cool here.

    The Big Ugly Borg Cube.

Cooler Master HAF xb evo case, 10+ year old tech.
    MSI pro Z690-A wifi DDR4.
    Intel I7 12700kf lga1700.
Deep Cool AS500, cpu air cooler.
    G.Skill TridentZ RGB DDR4 3200 32gbx2. (way overkill)
    Corsair RM750 PS.
    Samsung 1t M.2 SSD 980 pro w/heatsink.
MSI GeForce RTX 3050 Vetus 2x 8gb OC.
3 Cooler Master Sickleflow 120 ARGB fans.
Win11 pro, full internet download style, worked perfectly. (was still using win7 pro, cough, cough)

...an old WD green 2t and old Samsung cd/dvd (makes more noise than the PC) were the only parts i ended up cannibalizing from the old machine.

Runs at 12F, over room temp +/- 2*
Near silent with fans at 1000rpm.
Did get to 200F on a Cinebench R23 test run (22631 score), but that's not a normal thing for me. Was running 170F On the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility with a CPU stress test.

Have yet to see the GPU fans kick in but i turned them on low just to get some air to the SSD that is tucked under the GPU.

MSI has a little thing where you can set the fans speed and color to adjust with the CPU temp, green/cool blue/warm red/hot... kinda neat.

Not all hi-tech H2O looking like it fell off the back of a UFO, don't get me wrong i like checking out cool PC builds.
This works for me, happy camper.

I like that case. Are those quick swap drive bays on the bottom right of it?

I'm in the market for another external hard drive. I want an SSD 2 to 4 TB, and would prefer a rugged one. What's your guys thoughts on them? Going to trust your opinions, have not steered me wrong yet.

    Yeah.
Yeah, that seems pretty high. I haven't used one, but Best Buy has this one at a much more reasonable price:

SanDisk - Extreme Portable 2TB External USB-C NVMe Solid State Drive

I've always just used a portable SSD enclosure and then whatever SSD I've had around. Also have one for nvme drives. Ssds are pretty durable, I've had one bouncing around in our camper for 5k plus miles including trips like the Dalton highway and Dempster.

I will, I looked for 5 or 10 minutes and gave up. I will find them eventually though. I think they were the 500gb variation.

With gpu prices falling and more in stock, I’m getting the itch again. If choosing today, would y’all pick a 3080 or 6800xt? Ideal system would also have a 5800x cpu if that matters.
