April inflation at 8.3%, .2% downtick from the March print.

The not so good news:

Mar '21 was a 2.6% CPI whereas April '21 was 4.something. Meaning this is almost as big a jump as last month from a higher base the previous year. Not great.

 

MoM CPI with a 50% beat. That's fucking impressive. Someone fire the asshat that's supposed to be fudging the figures. Unless that is the fudged figure. Then we are all fucked.

After looking it up i found that the majority run on bunker fuels, but with the new regulations they are required to burn fuels with less sulfur -or- find a way to emit less sulfur into the atmosphere. That means they have to either retrofit scrubbers on their exhaust or use fuel additives or completely overhaul their engines to run on a different fuel type. I'm thinking they may be using diesel as a fuel additive to dilute the fuel oil and lower the sulfur content,...at least in the short term while they figure out the best solution. That was my though process since diesel oil and fuel oil are around the same phase of processing. I was thinking they'd rather add that than some other additive that could possible damage the engine.

Those shipping regulations came into effect more than two years ago as part of IMO2020. Heavy fuel oil is typically treated using catalytic desulfurization with methane as the catalyst. Diesel is not part of that equation.

You've got the wrong idea all together about fuel blending. Lowering the sulfur content of bunker fuel is not nearly that straightforward. And I'm not sure what you mean by "around the same phase of processing". Heavy fuel oil is about as far from a middle distillate as gasoline or LPG.
