My 2006 ignition key cylinder finally bit the big one. Not too disappointed because I was down to my last key anyway. My final key was the valet key and didn’t open the door but would start her up until now.
Most Toyota dealers quoted me crazy prices for new keys. I plan on removing the ignition key module and dropping it off to a locksmith for rekeying. I think I could get away with taping my valet key to the sensor to get around the chip

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A locksmith should be able to cut and program new keys much cheaper than the dealer.

As long as you have a key with a good chip you could install a remote starter kit. Those include bypass modules to simulate the chip and let the truck start. But... you still need the key to drive it which would work as long as the key cylinder "run" contacts are still OK even if the start contacts are not.

The other thing you could do is buy or borrow an XTool D7, D8 or I believe even the cheaper A30M or similar and program your own new keys. Might make sense depending on how much the stealership is asking... and if you want a good scan tool anyway.

Don't know if you're in the Seattle area but check out Bulger Safe and Lock in Lake City, they do good work

Not sure if this helps you out, but using techstream to pair up new keys is very easy to do. Although I think you need to have a working key to pair up the new ones, so you might be SOL.
