Sanity Check for 2009 JBL headunit replacement

Been a few years since I was on here...anyway:

I am finally going to replace the headunit in my 2009 4dr DCSB V6 TRD OffRoad w/ JBL (not sure if all that is needed but figured I should give all the info).

Useful info: I worked for Best Buy selling and installing car stereos in the early-mid 2000s. It has been a while but I am confident I can get this install done myself.

What I want:

• Keep factory JBL speakers and subwoofer (for now...)
• Wireless Carplay
• Double-din 7" (or larger) touchscreen
• Sirius/XM using factory antenna
• 6ch preamp output (for when I replace all speakers and amplify)

Not sure if I want/need or even possible:

• Steering wheel controls (do I need them? I really only use them to answer/hangup calls)
• Connect factory backup camera
• Connect factory phone mic

I say get a toyota/JBL wiring harness as well... the install is pretty simple if you've spent time in an install bay. Definitely get an

SWI-JACK steering wheel interface, its worth the money.

I don't know why you want to spend the money on an external Sirius tuner... they have an app for that and it's free, and you're gonna have to pay the monthly service fee either way.

While I know its a preference thing, IMO the smooth light grey scosche dash kit fits and looks immensely better than the metra kits.

 

Yeah, I didn't list the harness but obviously will need it. I am not hard wiring each wire

For the tuner, I prefer not using my phone/data and do drive in areas where cell signal is very weak or not available.

I do plan to get the Scosche kit! Metra was trash when I was installing 18 years ago. Good to know they still are.

 

One more piece of advice, pure convenience mod - get yourself

Not going to get the factory phone mic. You’re better off pulling the panel it’s in, ripping out the guts, and mounting your aftermarket mic inside. Keep in mind, your call quality will probably be crap.

 

Is your factory cam in the mirror?

 

Yes

 

You can do some minor splicing and get the video feed to the head unit if you want. The cam quality is horrendous though. Either leave it in the mirror or replace the backup cam entirely

 

Do you have a suggestion on how to get better/best call quality? The factory BT works well enough but definitely wouldn't mind an improvement.

 

For the best results, put the mic right in front of you. I always put them back inside the gauge cluster cove. Works as a funnel to get your voice into the mic, and prevents echo from the speakers.
