Oil change disaster advice needed

They can run the numbers and get within $500 and acknowledge their screw up and eat the difference. I talked to a friend of mine who owns a Toyota dealership. Its not that hard, nor is a new engine!

 

I wonder what variables allow a dealership to make that call? (As your friend suggests)

Maybe the dealership in question has too many constraints or mismanagement that requires scrutiny.

 

Or they can take as much time as they need to minimize money lost when they feel like they have a customer that is reasonable and understanding, especially if OP communicated that to them. Definitely not saying that OP shouldn't have more communication from them at the very least, but I think its safe to assume OP and dealer are still in good standings with each other at this current time.

 

I wish I could say these stories don't feed my confirmation bias, but they just keep coming!

I've only taken my truck in for service twice: once for the first oil change and once for the fuel pump recall. Both times they fucked up. Oil filter was over torqued so I had to break it to remove it the next oil change. And the fuel pump- they didn't fully plug in one of the lines so my car limped home and promptly dumped several gallons of fuel on the driveway.

Unless there's more recalls in the future, those guys aren't touching my truck ever again.

 

Had mine in for the diff howl, they bled the breaks and didn't top off the brake fluid reservoir. I freak out when the brake light came on a few days later.

 

I get the feeling that all this "easy stuff" like brakes, oil and other fluid related jobs get assigned to the youngest, nose-picking, mouth-breathing, motherfucker in the shop. Sadly, it's cheaper to have him fuck up 15% of the time than to pay a good mechanic that never makes a mistake or results in further warranty work.

 

Over the years I have been told I have cancer... twice within the span of 10 years. Additional tests and scans proved otherwise but being told you have cancer sucks when you don't have cancer. I fixed it. I just don't go to doctors or hospitals now.

Don't think its really the inexperience, I think its the shop's attitude towards such jobs. At the shop I first started working at as my first job, I was told the easiest way to destroy a vehicle is to screw up something fluid related, and I never did. I messed up other stuff as a new guy but no car ever left with an obvious leak or low fluid that I worked on.

 

I would think this should have been resolved by now. The Dealership screwed up, long term damage is unknown and the test they perfomed is not good enough. Not my business but I can say that I would have an answer a week ago or within days of the incident.

 

This "is" their business and to not know how to best resolve this after 3 weeks makes me suspicious. The length of time to reach a solution suggests to me they are either, a) inexperienced, or b) unsavory, meaning they are seeking the best resolution for "them" instead of both parties.

 

I just watched a YouTube video on changing the oil filter on a Highlander and the guy put the gasket in the wrong groove in the plastic housing. I have replaced this type before and it's pretty confusing on which groove the gasket should go into. I'm not at all surprised that it happens. Not the best design. I would be surprised if it filters any better than the old Fram type canister.

 

Maybe if Toyota was smart they would reinstate the spin on filter.

 

Nope, not unsavory, just typical corporate behavior nowadays. Contrary to what @Rannyhill stated, a Tacoma to the dealer isn't like an ice cream cone to a Dairy Queen. You'll be surprised at the amount of hand-wringing and "committee reviews" involved with a few thousand dollars of expenses. This is true even at Toyota head office, let alone a dealer. Those $200 billion companies didn't get rich by being generous...

Attention to detail.

I just received my oil filters and will do my own oil change at 13K miles...probably July time.

At that time, when I remove the filter housing, I will check to see where the o-ring is positioned on the housing. There are a couple of grooves so getting it on the correct one will be my priority.

I'm also installing the Fumoto valve and have the tubing for a clean oil change.

EDIT: Taking a look at it now, there is only one ring, albeit kinda wide, for the o-ring to fit. The other groves are part of the threads that screw into the engine.
