Thanks! Not sure how I missed your original post. In my '13, all I'd give up is a SECOND storage location for sunglasses, etc, (digital compass/air temp unit and garage door opener are all located elsewhere) so I'll have to confirm whether he can do one for my configuration.

 

So I know we talk about tuning and stuff like that all day long, but here is the real question, does anyone know if CA finally implemented their PCM flash checker or if they actually had a way to even do so in the first place? The issue seemed to have went radio silent after some time passed, so now I'm curious before I go and have any flash work done on my GM and cross a line I can't come back from.

 

The obvious solution is to move somewhere else. Don't come to Colorado, though, as our idiot governor cheats off Newsom's homework. We've become Commiefornia's eastern-most province.

 

I don't have a clue on how the original OVT tunes were written/locked..... But, I am using their V2 supercharged tune for 91 octane and it did not trigger a thing when I had to do smog back in Dec (before it went radio silent). The smog tech was pretty thorough and documented my equipment with Carb EO#s. And no, I did not accidentally leave a Big-Headed Benji on the dash prior to the test.

 

CA has not checked CVN's yet. They're only comparing Calibration ID's. Any HPTuners tune that I've done (myself or through OTT) will not have an issue passing in CA as of 5/11/22.

 

That causes a whole new set of issues outside of just trying to get a car smogged.

Well remember, our Tacoma PCM's are read only, where as the GM PCM's may show history of another type of PCM. I don't remember the exact verbiage that the machines were looking at, checksum or what have you, but it may appear different on GM computers that may have been flashed. So HP Tuners or not, I'm not sure if it's going to be an issue.

That raises another question though. If the factory calibration has been altered from the dealer itself (this one has twice) how can the state possibly factor that into their checks when checking for tuned PCM's? It's a stupid idea as a whole anyway because tunes are designed to optimize an engines running condition, not make it worse.

 

Understood. You're in good company, in that I'm similarly stuck in CO for at least the next 4-5 years. After that, I plan to be somewhere a lot less blue.

This is a great question. Some of you may recall... Pre-OVT and pre-HPT, I had to procure a replacement ECU for mine, so Toyota could load the TRD tune. My original ECU had been previously updated by the dealer IAW a TSB to reduce ping (knock/pre-detonation). That changed the ECU calibration ID, preventing Toyota from later installing the TRD tune. It was a very frustrating and expensive experience.

 

That's another thing I didn't think about either. What about the folks who have had to replace a PCM? Of course their calibration will be different than whatever the original is "supposed" to be.

 

Actually, all of the Calibration ID's are consistent across the board. They're broken down by year, engine, transmission, and if the truck is an X-Runner.

All 2015 Manual transmission 4.0L trucks (excluding X-Runners) will have the calibration ID 304A5000. The TSB update for that Cal ID is 304A5100, which subsequently isn't able to be converted to the TRD S/C Cal 3YWG4300 which happens to be the TRD Cal for all 2015 Manual Transmission 4.0L Trucks (excluding X-Runners).

There's actually a very short list (relatively speaking) of Calibration ID's that define all years, trans and vehicle types as well as the associated TRD S/C Cals that are "authorized" to be converted to the 3YWG S/C calibrations.

Starting in 2012, all the TSB updated N/A calibrations were no longer eligible to be converted to the 3YWG calibrations for some reason. All earlier trucks (including TSB updated ones) are able to be converted.

How do you find calibration ID's on HPT?

 

I don't know, I could have swore I saw 3YWG cal on my 2012 at some point. Unless I was seeing things. I don't know anymore. Lol.

You'll see "Operating System". That's your Calibration ID. The way HPTuners displays it however is it drops the last two zeros.

Is the calibration ID technically referred to as the CVN?

 

They're different.

The Calibration ID is akin to Windows XP or Windows 11. It's the "operating system" identifier.

CVN stands for "Calibration Verification Number", this is a fancy name for checksum. What the ECU does is compile the values within each segment of the flash memory, the total of those numbers is what the CVN equals. This allows tech's to quicky check the data in each segment is correct or unaltered (eg, the CVN matches a known program). If any data is altered within the segment then the checksum (CVN) will change or not match what it originally was.

In short, a 3YWG2600 Factory Calibration from Toyota will have a unique CVN. When tuned, we're changing the values within the calibration which will generate a new CVN. There's no way to fool the CVN. If CVN's are checked/compared no tuner will be able to hide the fact the vehicle has been tuned.

 

I'm going to send you a new log over from my current tune on the red dragon (not the taco). Apparently they are knock happy from the factory, but I don't seem to hear any of that at any point. I really need to know if this thing is running well or not, if you'd be so kind to take a look at it for me and let me know what you think or let me know if you need to have me add new channels to it, that would be awesome.

do tell me where you put it and make me an extra one. =) . I considered there but same thing I also use my sunglass mount (*cough* when I have a headliner in place)

 

I guess good thing I stopped going to the dealer after the first couple of years.
