Just the column, it is a structural post, not a cladding for a wood post (which is also a thing). I do not like the cladding as it has the potential to split at the seams if water gets between the wood and the PVC. Expansion and contraction causes the PVC to eventually crack.

 

Electrical in the garage is about 95% wrapped up! Ran outta 14/2 to do the lights in front of the garage door, but got everything else run, outlets installed, tied into the panel, and powered.

Still gotta clean up the wires for the shop lights, but they're all in. Each wall has its own circuit to avoid overloading. The light by the man door is a little dinky, but was cheap ($25 for a two pack) consume very little engergy, and will light it enough to see to unlock the door at 11:30 at night.

 

You going to insulate?

 

Yea, once finances recover a little bit. Alot of money has been shelled out since February. Hope to do it before winter hits, but if not it is what it is. I have a 140K BTU kero/diesel heater that would heat the space pretty quick no matter what. Even without insulation it's built better than the drafty 2 car garage at the old place; that one didn't even have a ceiling.

 

Well shit. Noticed water leaking down the driveway, originating around my water shutoff valve. No prob, snugged the gate valve tightly open but noticed the valve & pipes were dry. Then I see drips coming from down where the stucco meets the foundation, from behind the stucco. Check inside the garage & up at the top of the wall is stained & damp drywall. Looks like my hours of snaking the drain cracked a pipe. Endoscope being delivered tomorrow, time to open up the walls

I mostly seen the clam shell cladding that goes over a 4x4 post.

With the cladding does the inner wood post start to rot eventually?

I don't know the pros or cons to thing but I'm learning as go along.

 

What is the differences between the structural vinyl porch post and the structural vinyl columns?

Does the railing get mounted directly to the vinyl post/column or to a thicker aluminum end support that get to the cement porch?

 

If you use ACQ (treated wood), it shouldn't rot. However, the issue (especially where you are) is moisture getting between the cladding and the wood. It gets cold, water freezes and expands as it becomes ice while the cladding retracts as it gets cold. Eventually it cracks the cladding.

 

The difference is the shape. Columns are ornamental posts are generally square. It's mostly just what people call them at the time (they are interchangeable).

Railing gets mounted to the post/column with a covered bracket at the top and bottom rail. Depending on where your porch posts are, the railing can terminate at one of them or at a separate end post. Both are anchored to your cement porch with a flange and masonry lags or core drilled with a support. Railing sections come in a few widths (6', 7', 8') to fit a variety of setups and can be cut to fit smaller openings.

 

Started putting up doors outside today. Started with this pedestrian door from the garage my cousin fabricated for me and hung today. Still have several more to do. Next week getting the septic tank topped and some doors on my well pump/filter room out front

 

Also, made the tough decision to cut down this old Encino tree. We worked around it, tolerating the afternoon shade it gave our pool, until last week's storm broke a huge branch off that crashed INTO the pool. Did as much as I could do with my

So the kitchen plumbing does something like this



Cut some access holes in the garage, of course where I need to get to is all framed in with 2x6 where the gas/water mains are outside my garage. So I went up into the ceiling, unfortunately the water supply runs in that same gap between the joists, so my access is only about 4" on either side of the water pipe.


Looking up thru that ceiling hole you can see the ABS elbow, confirmed it's leaking like a sieve.



There's enough room to get a Dremel up there to cut the elbow out & glue in a new one. Just as I was making a shopping list i noticed something on the new endoscope: the downstream elbow has a slow leak as well! This one is 30" in, between the exterior wall & a joist, no access from below unless I open up the "top" of the exterior hideaway where the gas meter is. I don't think the HOA would like me doing that. The water main can be seen coming up from that exterior alcove, in the bottom of this pic.


Looked at my kitchen & the option there is cutting an access hole in the bottom of my corner cabinet, removing the tile, and then cutting open the subfloor. I think what I decided to do is open an access hole in the garage ceiling against the shared garage wall, on the other side of the joist shown in the pics above. Chop out 18" or so of that joist, leaving it intact where my access hole is shown above, with the fresh end of it now resting on the framing it's sitting on. That'll give me access to the elbows, and when done I can put the cut section of joist back in with some strong ties. This became a real bitch!

It's either this or pay my $2,500 deductible. And I really don't wanna make a claim since I just switched carriers in April!

Ceiling is open, joist is cut on each end. Tomorrow morning I'll get my oscillating tool up there to cut all the screws coming thru the subfloor & hopefully "pop" that section out to access the elbow behind it.

 

I cut a tree down by my garage a couple months ago, no l was not up on the ladder cutting but the blade from my tree saw got stuck so that was the only way I could get it. Getting down to the base I was cut damn near all the way thru and it just was levitating like that and just didnt want to fall.

Finished all the horizontal cedar siding , today prepped the kitchen bump out with rainscreen matrix so I can apply the cedar sidewall shingles , last step will be adding the corner trims around the house

 

Speaking of cedar, is it a thing that the West coast sort of substitutes Redwood for Cedar? I literally cannot find it in full sizes out here.
