Like almost anything on a manufacturer's site, you need to take it with a grain of salt. The mpg numbers are when the vehicle is driven in IDEAL conditions and at much slower speeds than people actually drive; like 55 on the hwy for example.

Next gen will have better fuel mileage if they use the I4 turbo, turbo hybrid I4, or BEV (confirmed)

98% of my driving is at 55 and under, averaging 22.5/tank. If I do have to get on the interstate here it bumps up to mid high 20s, the 30 mile stretch I use to get into the city is only 65.

People who like to blast 90 mph won’t see those numbers. Seems like those people are the ones who piss and moan about gas mileage and power. They also tend to hang a bunch of bullshit off their trucks, then cry that the performance and fuel consumption is effected.

I would be happy with a solid 30, but won’t loose any sleep over it if it doesn’t.

I'm averaging under 30 miles a day during the workweek. An EV will be much welcomed in my life. My power to my house is from nuclear and receive a special EV rate and rebates when i get one.

TacomaWorld hypermiler outliers aside, if the new Turbo-4 (and even better, the hybrid) can get a real-world 24 mpg average that that is a big improvement overall from the current V6.

For comparison, the 4,700 lb Sienna Hybrid minivan gets...

PERSONALLY I get 17-21 in my Tacoma depending on the season and how much time I spend on or off the highway. A constant 24 or 25 makes my truck a very reasonable commuter for me, and I think the turbo-4-hybrid could manage numbers pretty close to the Sienna.

Better milage and more torque. It's a win win for the next gen. buyer.

MPG numbers come from EPA test results. They use the same criteria for all vehicles which makes it useful when comparing to other vehicles.

Effin’ Sienna is ridiculously good. I encouraged my buddy to get one when he had his third kid and needed more seating. Nope, Subaru cult and wanting to feel like an “adventurer” won out.

Toyota is replacing the 3.5 v6 with a 2.4 4cyl turbo in the 2023 Highlander. Same fuel economy but better power characteristics. Probably expect the same if they go that route with the Tacoma unless they add more gears to the transmission or do some other fuel saving tricks. When comparing vehicles such as Highlander and Ford Maverick with both ICE and Hybrid power trains there is a 10 mpg gain in hybrid package so one can expect similar results if Tacoma follows this route.

My point was it's still an apples to apples comparison as they are using the same standards for both vehicles.

That may be a good engine in the highlander/lexus nx. Ratdaddy made a good point and I will quote some of what he said...

"The NX is not a 4runner or tacoma, both of which weigh 600lbs more and both of which have larger and heavier tires(rotating mass). The peppiness that he felt in the NX may feel downright sluggish in the Taco/4runner."

Also whatever fuel economy you are seeing in those models...highlander/lexus nx etc that use that engine, expect less mpg in the tacoma/4runner due to reasons above.

Well they can tune the fuel, air, trans to compensate possibly.

Highlander weighs around 4400lbs so closer to Tacoma. I already posted this but the new turbo will make the Tacoma way more peppy with the lower torque max. I don't get why turbo power and torque would not be the same as NA power and torque? There will be a lot more torque at lower RPM than current model. That's what you want in a truck.

The Ford Ranger 2.3 is a good example. That truck feels much faster than Tacoma especially at higher elevations.

King 2.5’s with adjusters from accutune front and rear, 88 rotors rear add a leaf, Camburg X-joint UCA’s, Factory style trd pro 16” wheels with 0 offset, 285/75/16 KO2’s, pro grille, Front bumper viper cut, trd front skid plate, full RCI under skid plates, Cali raised trail sliders, exhaust cut dump, KDMax 10.0 tune
My huge drawback about the ranger is it’s direct injection only. If they put the 2.7 ecoboost in it, it would be perfect I think.

Well said. I laugh when I see guys with lifted trucks on 35s (or larger) complaining about mpg.

True. But it seems that a truck's mpg takes a bigger hit when driven above posted speed limits than a car would. The mpg of a Tacoma is going to drop a lot faster than the mpg of a Corolla if both are driven at 70-75mph. But you raise a good point; the mpg numbers are supposed to come from the EPA, not the manufacturer.

I don't think the current Ranger was capable of accepting the 2.7 six cylinder, pretty sure l remember reading it could only hold a four. The Bronco uses the next generation Ranger platform so its possible that one might have a six.

They might not be able to shave 600 pounds from the newest model but if they went to composite fenders/hood and door skins they could shave 200-300 pounds.

A truck that doesnt show rust would sell on that feature alone.
