Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but also make sure you know what you're welding and if necessary grinding off any coatings to work with clean bare metal. Most common one is probably anything galvanized, that zinc coating on there is not good to breath in. If you're working with mild steel and in a well ventilated area theres nothing too bad to worry about. No worse than like, breathing in exhaust fumes or brake cleaner working on trucks haha (edited to add: definitely don't ever weld anywhere near chlorinated brake cleaner. that's like, insta-toxic gasses)

Do not ever clean metal with brake cleaner then weld said metal. Poison gas is created - I forget which one.

A guy almost died from this, and wrote about it. Not sure if it made to YouTube, but the article was going around various automotive forums.

When I get a chance, I will look for it.

You're correct, use acetone. That said, that's not what Spencer was saying. He was just comparing the toxicity of brake clean fumes to welding fumes.

It's chlorine gas and occurs from welding chlorinated brake cleaner. Non-chlorinated brake cleaner is a thing, but acetone is better and cheaper for cleaning off dirty metal before welding

40 +years Welding ( all the processes) with no serious problems! I have had more injuries in the kitchen trying to cook

Welding in enclosed spaces like the welders on the Alaskan Pipe line!!

Using the wrong chemicals to clean metal prior to welding

The only chemical I ever used is Acid to clean Aluminum exposed to the elements.

I remember years ago A welder complaining about fumes in the shop then lighting his Cigarette and nodding his head and start welding

Sorry, I could have been more clear. Edited my post to specifically point out the dangers of chlorinated brake cleaner. But yeah, was definitely just comparing the toxicity, not suggesting you use it to clean with.

You are getting sucked into the same format the news uses. Don't let the few negatives stop you from experiencing the many, many more advantages of having and using a welder .

    Everything has risks...everything.

I think there is more risk driving in rush hour in the DFW area than welding.

    Learn and do it!

Cleaning up the welding area. I let so much shit accumulate under and on top of the welding table it was embarrassing. Need to get rid of so much useless stuff in the garage.

So, I got around to installing a 230v outlet just for my welder finally.

Had a brain fart, cause it wasn't until I was done that I realized I should've flipped the outlet 180 degrees

Thank you all for the advice. Definitely feel better and hopefully will have time to get started this weekend.

Now all I gotta do is find steel…

i read that wrong at first I thought I saw you were putting a cylinder on your plasma Table.

It has been years since i saw a Plasma table use Compressed Air in Cylinders!

    Then I looked again.

To some people everything in my Shop would be Junk.

They have no idea what most things are or even do.
