    Bought a bike roof rack on Craigslist to bring my bike to Illinois without sacrificing interior or hitch room. Figured it would be high up there, but it's hella high up

    You should give yourself some sort of visual cue on your dash to remind yourself that it's up there and you don't accidentally rip it off in a parking garage or drive thru or something. I could see that happening after a long day of driving on your way there. Something as simple as a sticky note in your field of view.
