On the other hand when my 2016 was checked because of shifting issues it was "no more than 1 quart low" and nobody at Toyota got too excited about it.

I’ll mention too this is a return trip after the original exchange. It was not driving right after I picked it up the first time and that’s how we got down this road.

if the truck is driven in hot, it will take at least a few hours for it to get down to temp.

Truck stayed overnight. I brought it back to him because it wasn’t driving right and I suspected a low fluid condition. After he told me specifically how he check the trans I directed him to service manual and finally after the truck sat overnight he check the level. I’m hoping that it was done correctly now.

Good news for the future of if you want to verify the correct fill volume, no scan tool needed (just a jumper wire).

    See Page 5, section b, Step 1

you can just hook up a cheap obd scanner ($20) and use one of the bluetooth scanner apps to check the transmission temps. that's what i did to check the fluid level on my 2021.

The month of August should be deemed 'National Transmission Fluid Level Check Month' so that everyone could simply wait for a hot day or night with outside air temperatures of 95 to 113 degrees, start up their Tacoma and immediately check the fluid level while it's sitting in the driveway or garage.

Radio, Television, and online public service announcements could be made for the benefit of all.

Your Tacoma transmission was filled at the factory where the interior temperature was a chilly 68 degrees and the transmission fluid dispensed from a large tank into the vehicle was... 68 degrees.

The quantity of expansion for the transmission fluid from ambient air temperature of 68 degrees to the 95 to 113 degrees range is only a few ounces at most.

Five years ago, when I checked it, I believe my transmission was about 28 ounces low from the factory.

Hanging in gear with the cruise engaged, laggy upshifts, feeling of slip with 4wd engaged.

As in a flush? Full exchange by machine? If so there is no need to check at temp. Ie: if you take out 12 and put in 12 nothing has changed.

Trans temp isn't a normal pid in this truck so most scan tools won't get it.

I just saw you were having an issue to start, so amount for amount would not apply.

expansion for oils and transmission fluids is around 0.0007 per degree C (0.07%/C). I will let you do the math. Work in metric.

the answer is not much between 38 and 82c. using my formula above then it expands less than a 10th of a percent. So if your transmission was 99% full at 100F, it is 99.1% full at 185F. Not exact but close.
