Redesigned Tacoma in 2023?

Well the 3.5 was used in other variants, when the tacoma was first introduced look at how much complaints there were on it. I'm not saying I don't like the 2.4 turbo as I'd prefer that over the 3.5, I guess I just hope they do a better job with it over the 3.5.

 

I agree, I'd prefer that engine over the 3.5. I'm just saying how peppy that engine feels in the other variants may not feel the same in the tacoma. I just hope between the air, fuel mixture along with the transmission gearing that it doesn't feel as sluggish as when the 3.5 was first introduced in the tacoma.

 

I have the 2016 and its not horrible. i guess there were a few issues when it came out but nothing to big...my biggest complaint is missing out on extra features that they add every year...like the power rear window added in 2017 and the power tailgate lock in 2019

 

I routinely drive a 2013 and 2020 highlander with the 3.5 L engine. The 2020 is the Atkinson cycle version and has much less low to mid range torque than the older one. Atkinson cycle engines, while a good match for hybrid vehicles with their eCVTs and extra boost from electric motors, sacrifice low end torque for efficiency in ICE only vehicles.

I like the 3.5 and it has plenty of power to get on the highway, do whatever I need. I don't tow heavy loads but would you buy any mid-sized truck as a serious tow vehicle? It's not a hotrod but who buys one thinking it will be. I've not been in a supercharged/turbo'd four cylinder vehicle that was as rewarding as a higher cubic inch engine to get similar power. To each their own.

 

I never bought Toyota trucks to go fast. They just always get me were I need to go reliably.

The good ole 3.0 V6 150hp 5spd. Never left me stranded on our adventures. Even on the Alaska Hwy.

 

I had the exact same truck except it was green, and around the same year, 92-93. Loved that truck.

Whatever is used in the 4th gen, there had better be a larger improvement in mpg. From my 2nd gens to my 3rd gen Tacomas, there is only 1-2mpg improvement on the tank average. Hardly noticeable.

My tacos have always been mostly stock. My driving is mostly city and has been for a long time so I am definitely comparing apples to apples.

I agree, the tacomas have never been known for their mpg. Think people mostly get them for their reliability track record, size and off road capability.

They have the aerodynamics of a brick...and like you said from the 2nd to 3rd gen there was barely a difference, about 1 mpg difference.

Only thing we do know is that the new tundra is rated at 18/24 estimate so the new tacoma should be better than that.

The lexus nx 350 awd with the 2.4 turbo is rated at 22/29/25.

If I had to make an educated guess, I would say the new tacoma would be somewhere between those 2...so maybe something like 20/26/23.

I haven't looked but I'm sure it would be competitive or similar to the ford ranger turbo, maybe along with santa cruz.

 

Assuming the 4th gen launches late 2023 or sometime in 2024, I won’t be making a truck change until 2026 at the earliest. I waited 18 months for the bugs to be ironed out in the 3rd gen and it wasn’t long enough.

Love Toyota products, but they really need to step up. I’m looking for a mega major 4Runner upgrade first.

With 40k miles on my loaded 2016 4Runner Trail Premium, and 15k miles on the loaded 2021 Tacoma Offroad, we can last a LONG time if needed.

 

I had a 2012 Tacoma with the 4.0 that pinged for octane worse than any vehicle I've ever seen. Sold it in 11 months and bought a 2013 Nissan Frontier. Hated the truck but Nissans 4.0 was a powerhouse but gas thirsty. Gave it to my son. Have a 2022 Tacoma due for delivery any week now, I hope. I'd much rather have a thirsty properly tuned motor than a crippled efficient one. I've heard the 3.5 is decent and I think Toyota should refine it further maybe with an 8 speed transmission rather than abandon it for a 4cyl turbo. Too much can go wrong if you ask me. I'm glad I didn't wait for a 2023 to pull the trigger. Who knows it might be great.

 

The Version 4 taco will blow donkey nuts for a couple years (if you can get one). I bought year three of the version 2. It's such a reliable and great truck we kept it when we got our 2022 taco

 

The 3.5 sucks gas way too much for Toyota to meet the ever tightening mpg requirements. The next gen Tacoma will have a single turbo 4 cylinder engine; I think it's all but a done deal. Say goodbye to the 3.5 V6.

 

Maybe they will make the Pro a Hybrid.

Maybe yours does. Mine doesnt. I am happy with my mpg city being nearly 17 and highway being 20 to 21 and thats with steel skids and sliders.
