the problem with the plastic one is that its hard to "feel" when it bottoms out. It just keeps on turning even after the flange hits, thus causing the overtightening pandemic.

    Where’s the fun in that!

Actually, I just went and checked my wrench and specs are 20-100 ft*lb. Certificate was within 0.5 ft*lb at 20, 60, and 100 so I’m good.

Yep, that's why I got the aluminum one. I would imagine if those threads got buggered up it would also create a problem.

May be nothing wrong with it but its just not the easiest plus it's more messy. I have not had any issues personally when I've changed mine myself but apparently there are many others that have. This is my first Toyota and there has definitely been a learning curve to changing the oil. Gets easier each time.

I suspect part of the reason for the plastic housing is if over tightened the easy to change and inexpensive plastic part will fail before the aluminum housing on the engine.

The steel filter wrench with flatten the flats or snap the ears off the aluminum housing before either of the threads are damaged.

No final outcome. They’re supposed to be letting me know when they locate a truck.

Perhaps, however the plastic part could offer some insurance against the ham handed.
Unfortunately, there are people out there who can break a good anvil with a plastic hammer. :frusty:

I spent 35 years in factories -- workers can (and will) break damn near anything given time...

And they always say exactly the same thing: "...it just broke..."

So with the plastic or metal housing treat it like a spin on? Hand tighten only basically.

And these are the people that have no business changing their own oil and if they break it, oh well.

More true with the aluminum housing, but if the threads are clean and true on the plastic one, yes

And if they can't make it in a factory they get a job at a dealership changing oil on poor Rannys truck. (unfortunately that isn't really funny, more sad...)

What’s your estimate ($$$) what the same fix would be for a Tacoma?
