If you’re heavy and have 33” or bigger tires 4.56 may not cut it. I’m heavy on 33’s with a 6-speed MT but if I was an AT running the same set up I’d still go to 4.88 to have a more drivable truck. This is my opinion and YMMV for what your needs/wants/uses are.

I did not have my rear swingout or 35's but with bumpers skids/sliders no heavy swingout the truck was very drivable with 33's and AT I also had an OV tune so that likely helped a bunch. Def a big debate on 4.88 vs 4.56 but everyone said go 4.88 if your going 35's. but yah its really hard to say with how different everyones truck is.

I understand the original question was a re-gearing. But the ring and pinion ratios are only part of the gearing system. Thru this entire thread only one person mentioned dealing with other aspects of the gearing system. One person mentioned adding a crawl box. When people want to discuss or consider Hwy. use axle ratios, trans ratios and tire size should all be considered. When off road use is discussed we need to also add in the transfer case low range ratio. It would be nice if some one offered lower ratios for the chain driven cases. But until some one does my plan would be to ditch the stock transfer case and go with an Atlas. Yes you can add a crawl box but my concern with that option is significantly increasing the torque to the transfer case.

For reference 4.56 auto weight 7k lbs this is GPS speed. I do have a hypertech installed but this was easier to show folks. Truck is S/C as well if. Matters for folks. RPMs are lower than I thought

Running 33s skinnys on my v6 auto PreRunner. I want the truetrac installed... So I'm regearing at same time. 4.30 too tall? Lot of highway miles and light off-road.

No. 4.10's would be about as close as you could get to stock final drive ratio with 33's vs the stock 30.5" tires and 3.73's. So 4.30 will actually be lower. With my 34" I even considered 4.30 but will go 4.56 knowing my freeway speeds will go from 75mph down to 70 to keep RPM's reasonably in check. Mine is a 2nd gen but if you have a 3rd gen they do like higher RPM's. With a lot of highway miles I would stay with 4.30's.

That's what I meant... Lower. So would you recommend 4.30 for me? It's a PreRunner. Or still with 4.10. We tow my 2k lb camper occasionally too

My opinion would be the 4.30 especially now you state a 2k trailer. FYI. Higher numerical number is a lower gear ratio. It refers to how many times your drive line turns in relationship to your axles.

You should be fine with 4.30 and even reduce a bit of load due to the extra tire weight.
4.10 would also work and would be my suggestion for a manual truck. But since you said auto, 4.30 is good

When I ran 4.56 on my auto with 33’s, the rpm was about 100 lower than what a stock manual trans runs at. I loved that combo. It gave the truck so much more torque and usable power.

thanks i think this makes sense. especially since this truck is going to be used to drive up to the sierras a lot this year with the trailer.

sounds good. appreciate the advice. i'll stick with my gut and keep my order with ecgs the same. cant wait to get the truetrac in.

should be good with the 4.30 then. thanks

Truck is just over 6k lbs
33's now, will be going 35's.
Have a small camping trailer I tow; drive mostly highway @ 70-80 mph.

Looking at 4.30's, but leaning toward 4.56's.

Definitely go with the 4.56 if you plan on towing with 35s. It will rev until you get the tires on. 4.30 on 35s is stock ratio. So one step up will be good. When towing know that you will want to stay under 70

Good point, and I drive slower when towing for safety. I should have included that.

my truck is probably a little over 5k and i tow a 5-6k car/trailer combo. i fell like it barely does the job with 4.88s and a supercharger. I wouldn't even consider 4.30s if it was me.

I'd be looking at 4.88 for 35's with auto trans. I had 33's with 4.56 on an auto and that didn't feel very impressive. Only added weight I had was skid plates.
