Those gm motors sure made good power though. Imo, the rest their vehicles are crap.

Good power, and reliable/well made are not the same thing.

I was looking around for how long they last and it seems that even though some say the life of the engine in many cases the recommended mileage is 120k I found this old post:

    "Hey guys-

I have a 1995 Landcriuser with 129,000 miles on it, it sat for 2 weeks when I was on a business trip out of town without being run or on the road. When I got back and started it I heard a liitle chatter in the engine while it was runnung. However, since then it's been fine and have heard nothing. I've been told by mechanics if I start to hear that chattering again it probably is the timing chain and should replace it before it breaks and maybe cuts through the crankcase. The total cost would be around 2,000 at one shop and the other price was up to 2,700 at the other shop. I use it to tow my 19' champion bass boat and sometimes on trips to the mountains, it has been garaged and well maintained since I have owned it and have preformed all maintanence thru out the years. One Toyota shop said the only way to tell is to check it, the timing chain to see if it needs to be replaced for 100 dollars, however, I am not sure if I trust this dealership, whats to stop them from saying it needs replaced even if it doesn't? Any suggestions?
    Not trusting in Phoenix, AZ
    Thanks"

    And this

" The timing chain issues are extremely common in the 22R series engines. In fact, they almost never last longer than about 150K miles and can do everything from wear holes in the water jacket or snap and ruin the engine. The 22R chains generally stretched over time and this is where the problems began and if you're luck where the first warnings of impending failure come up as the "start up rattle". The earlier 20R duel timing chain never had this problem and usually lasted the life of the time thanks to the heavier duty duel chain and metal backed guides."

My 1986 toyota 22re engine needed a new timing and some of these plastic looking guides at 120k miles. Engine was making noises on startup. I'm not sold on chains.

Ya the gr engine has been around 20 years now. I think timing chain issues would be made apparent by now.

Just to contradict myself tho, Toyo. used to almost exclusively be chains until the 22R put a bad name on them. It also was one of the first engines to last so long apart from that issue too so that and noise drove them into belts. It's been a good thing to me. As long as it's designed in to change something easy, I don't really care.

    Belts win.

I don't know, a belt just never seemed robust enough to me for such a critical role in the engine, like if someone said to use a plastic cam shaft.

That sucks for sure. I have done at least a hundred 4.7 TB changes over my life. I always inspect the belt joint before install. I have seen them cut when being pried over a idler though. And I have seen a WP fail and wear all the teeth off.

But I have also had to replace TCs on both 4.0s and 5.7s and I would absolutely rather replace a TB any day of the week as well as I prefer how much quieter a TB motor is.

there were other parts of the belt that weren't torn, but sort of delaminated it was very odd. It looked fine on install and went for 10 k miles so what ever was wrong with it had to work its way out to the point of failure. I loved that truck to, RIP.

Thats where I started as well. Replacing damn plastic TC guides on 22re. Then headgaskets on 3vze, but I appreciated the TB.

Honda owners are used to factoey belt components failing. It's all too puny.

Technically they are right, when the chain goes the engine blows up too.

Very rare, nothing to worry about.

Big thing is regular oil changes and correct oil.

I was pretty happy when Subaru went from belt to chain. The belt on my wife's 2011 Legacy was a fairly large undertaking and took nearly an entire Friday off work (including water pump replacement). But very expensive to have the dealer do it. Probably did not need it at 100k, but the dealer recommended so I did it.

My second truck was a 97 F150XLT with the 4.6L, I got it with 223k on it from family.
It was maintained meticulously. Going up a pass with 2 dirt bikes and 30+mph winds it skipped a tooth on the tired chain.
I was wondering why she was doing 50MPH with the pedal to the floor.
$3K later I had the motor rebuilt and it ran like a champ until I got my Taco

oh yeah. those have very long chains for the OHC. If its an OHV with a short chain my 94' 4.0 was still going on original chain at 262k miles when sold
