Drone ooofs

Any reason why a whoop? Unless you're flying real close to people or in small rooms indoors the smaller whoops don't seem to perform that well and can't carry cameras that well. Though the naked GoPro would be lighter and a better option. They seem to be recommended for beginner flying and made for that purpose by all the "bind and fly" companies in the FPV world.

The palm sized whoops like 65mm or 75mm have their place as indoor flyers but those aren't carrying a naked GoPro.

reason is for hard to get shots, for instance I do alot of off-road photos and video, I crashed my mini 2 so many times trying to get a moving right shot between my driver and passenger windows , essentially through one window and out the other.

 

So for prop guards more or less. I know I could hit that gap (*most of the time) but then I'd get cocky and try to yaw spin it after entering the first window and have it flying out the other window but taking out the rearview mirror in the process.

Had a pretty good drone oof last fall with my DJI Spark... I was out on my bike, and thought I'd get some footage of this river which was fairly high:


Didn't realize it, but I had a cracked prop, and between the air currents from the river and the prop, Ole' Sparky took off across the river and landed in this tree:


There is NO way to get across this river; it's steep, rocky sides and deep, fast running water for miles in each direction. Fortunately, on the other side, there's a logging road. Unfortunately, it's a 18+km ride to this spot from the nearest place I can park (active haul road, gated), so I loaded up my mountain bike and headed out. Fortunately, I do a bit of tree work, and have my own belt, spurs and flip-line, which i needed because despite appearances, that branch is a good 25' above ground.


As luck would have it, it POURED all night while Sparky slept in the tree...


But, I was able to get it down (water literally poured out of it), but after three days over the furnace vent, everything was as good as new!

 

Back in 2015 I kitbashed this bastard together to see if I could. It was a great flyer, could do a solid 25 minutes if it was carrying a 10,000 mA battery (battery is roughly the size of a brick, it's a big mother). It had a radio range of 1/2 mile and could be programmed to run GPS waypoints independently. The 3 axis gimbal was also fully controllable from the ground, with live video feed.

I'm not the worlds best at soldering though.

I didn't know it but one of the motor controllers had an intermittent short. So I'd get up to my ceiling, boards would get hot, and suddenly I'm watching 800 dollars worth of lead balloon hurtle back towards earth.


Project Barking Spider got rebuilt from it's own ashes at least three times. Eventually I figured out from dumb luck which board was bad, so that problem stopped. The last time I flew it I had a telemetry malfunction when doing a test GPS hold at 20 feet. Thing rocketed up to 200 feet, hovered, then eventually clicked over to return-to-launchpad mode. It was a panic moment, but barking spider survived.


Darn thing has been sitting in my closet for 5 years. One of these days I need to get it out and power it up. When it worked it was a lot of fun.

So, got my second drone ever, a DJI Mavic Mini 2 and right away ordered a remote release attachment so I could take my fishing line out on the beach farther than I could cast. Well, testing the release for max distance the RF remote would work with a parachute I made was blowing the parachute too far away. I decided to make a 3 foot streamer with duct tape, a wide flat string and a ring to attach to the release mount. I successfully got the drone up and tested it from 300 feet, so I wanted to try 400 feet. The RF remote would not connect at that height, so I started bringing the drone down and the string got caught in the props and the drone fell. At least the streamer acted properly and slowed the descent down (a bit). It landed hard in short weeds. My drone was 1 week old at that point and I ran over thinking the worst. Where it hit a small bush must have seriously assisted in my drone survival, the only thing that was physically broken was one of the snap-on legs that came with the remote release kit. I took the remainder of the release kit parts off and attempted to fly the Mini again and it flew like a charm.... What a relief. No more (un-weighted) streamers.... LOL
