It could be anything. What if I go gambling in Oklahoma? What if someone needs to take a quick trip to New Mexico for a procedure that is illegal in the surrounding states? Many states are currently proposing legislation that will prosecute residents if they have certain types of procedures done out of state even if they are totally legal in the other state.

This is not tinfoil hat stuff, this is actually happening right now. And yes, I would be SUPER annoyed if I got pulled over because I ate at a restaurant that was next to a dispensary.

I don't have enough information to understand what the DCM collects and who it sends it to.

I know things run out, but at a place owned by a tech giant worth billions, I find this to be unacceptable.

What states are making noise about prosecuting its citizens for legal activities in other states that are illegal in their home state? I believe that would be illegal since no state has jurisdiction outside its borders. Anyone who is a guest of another state can be prosecuted by that state for violating its laws even if their activities are legal in their home state. That would sure put a damper on Nevada since prostitution and gambling is pretty much illegal everywhere. I imagine the national level gov would step in put a stop to that claiming that such crime crosses state boundaries is by definition theirs to investigate and prosecute.

Watch this. There are a lot of loopholes where the government can get data through a 3rd party that would normally require a court order if it were to gather it itself.

What a genius. Ive never understood tesla owners wanting to rely on their phone for unlocking and starting the car. Hopefully this genius learned to bring his key/card with him just in case.

Why not put the dcm on a toggle switch and you can choose when to or not to use those features

Kinda surprised there isn't a mention of John Deere in a certain EurAsia context.

You are assuming facts not in evidence. I struck the offending sections and initialed my edits. Dealer never peep’d, nor has Toyota complained.

Furthermore; my Taco came with a factory sticker by the panic button advising that data is collected and reported AND includes instructions for how to OPT-OUT of the data collection and reporting.

My first two requests were ignored. But this afternoon; success, I think. Toyota sent an email confirming that their spyware is no longer spying. For now, I choose to trust Toyota.

Meanwhile I am contemplating disconnecting the cellular antenna and installing a resistor in its place (if possible).

haha! I think the John Deere thing falls under the category of "you'll own nothing and like it!"

There are multiple reports that the DCM has its own internal back-up battery … so that it can continue functioning even when disconnected from the vehicle power.

    A bunch..and no build thread!
OP, I can see by your tag profile that you were in the CG.

They've had you chipped since you enlisted.

A Toyota is the least of your concerns as far as data goes.

I never mentioned the compelling event that motivated me to disable Toyota’s spyware.

I received a letter from my auto insurance company “reminding” me that I must must verify where I live. Sign here, return using the provided SASE. I did not move. Dad died. Mom needs a lot more help. I park the Taco in her garage 300 miles away. I fly myself to her very rural, small town in Ohio and Uber to the family homestead. Help mom with whatever and then fly home the next day or two. The Taco in the barn is my transportation.

I ignored State Farm’s letter. A month later I get a follow-up letter that spanks me for ignoring the first letter and again asks me to verify my address. Having retired from a tech job in the big data industry I suspect big data tracking … I decide to see how much farther SF is gonna push. Another month, another letter, a bit sterner.

I talk with my agent. SF Hq is supposed to copy the agents on all mail from Hq … and she knows nothing of this. I tell her the truth and she advises that my home address is indeed what I should be using. I send her a copy of the letter and ask her to figure out what is going on. Another month, yet another letter. I specifically ask about the letters … she says that she cannot discuss it …

Clearly, one of the data brokers knows the Taco is in Ohio and SF is buying my Taco’s location history. Toyota’s app baits me to save money on auto insurance by sharing my usage history. I do not click to Agree. Toyota is one of several suspects and they ignore my first two requests to stop collecting vehicle data, so I post here asking if anyone else as been successful in opt’ing out. The usual TW dimwits begin their usual dick swinging and immediately drag the thread off-topic.

Perhaps it is not Toyota. I almost exclusively use cash or gift cards, so they are unlikely to be the snitch. If I use a loyalty card, all my identification data is fake. My de-Google’d (Graphene OS) phone stays with me, so it does not spend much time in Ohio. Ohio permits the use of ALPR’s; perhaps they’ve snitched. Or perhaps it is the EZ Pass that spends most of its life in the glove box. Or perhaps someone is scanning Bluetooth MAC’s, or TPMS MAC’s. Or perhaps the cellco for the telematics data that Toyota hired is selling vehicle location data. So many suspects.

My third call to Toyota … finally gets their spyware turned Off, I hope. At least the app is no longer receiving real-time updates.

Incorrect, again. Was a USCG Aviator long ago. Retired out of DCEETA. Never chipped. Thank you for jumping to (false) conclusions.
