The SKINNY on skinny tires

Chalk test has me at about 33 front and rear. Rear should go down a little bit but I am going to keep it since I often run heavy in the back.

I sold my taco with the winter tires on and still have these in the garage. I ran them for maybe 4-5k miles before winter last year. They are 33” tires that fit on my 2021 without a lift and without any rubbing. I’m not on here much anymore so feel free to call/text me at (3zero3) 720-1065.

Assuming a 2-3" lift and SPC UPC; what rim specs go best with 255/85r16 or 255/80r17 tire to require as little trimming, pounding, and hopefully no body mount mod?

guys clear them at articulation on stock trucks with factory sr5 or off-road wheels, which are 16x7 +25 offset. At 2-3 inches lift you could probably get away with an 8 inch wide wheel with 0 offset.

 

I mean all things being constant, would their be a divergence in performance? If I had a 285 (33”) vs a 255 (33”) tire on my taco, and aired down both equally, I will get more flotation from both setups, albeit the 285 will have a larger contact patch than a 255.

what were you hoping that the video would mention?

 

17" rims have more options for 255 widths and cheaper options. If one were going to buy new wheels would a 7, 7.5, or 8" wide rim be best for a 255 aired down condition? Which is least likely to pop a bead when aired down as low as one would consider?

 

Bumping up from 33’s to 35’s. Skinny gang! 255 coopers to 35x10.5 kendas.

Skinnier wheel is less likely. A good trick to do is wrap the bead of the wheel with 2/3 wraps of duct tape to create a "tighter" fit, poor mans beadlock.

 

Skinnier wheel would be better. Alpha Equipt just put out a set of 17x7.5’s made for skinnies. Of course they didn’t release them until after I had already gotten new wheels…

 

Morning Taco World. Been checking out all the different details here in the Skinny Tire thread. I have to say you guys are a wealth of information. So, please forgive me in advance for being a novice in the Rims & Tires department.

But I've finally worn out the stock tires and need to purchase a set and have not known which way to go, so advice is greatly appreciated.


2019 Sport DCLB. Stock rims. Not in a position to upgrade rims and tires all at once.....Looking through this thread has been helpful, but I still have no real world experience with this kinda stuff. So, any experience with a 255/80/17 on these rims. rubbing? Mileage? Speedometer affects? Thinking 85's would be a stretch without some lift.

My mechanic recommended the Toyo AT III or the Falken WP. I do like both and it appears a good number of you guys do as well. Although he did not like the idea of changing stock size 265/65/17. He was super busy and did not elaborate but assume his concerns are the ?'s above, or is there other things I need to be aware of.

I'm a contractor so hauling tools, materials, etc daily. and then a weekend warrior when I can, into the woods, camping, fishing, etc. We get a trip out west most years, CO, UT last fall. Here in NC not a great deal of true off-road options, but some forest roads etc. No lift on truck, but would love to upgrade rear suspension as it's kinda wimpy with a load. Anyone willing to point me in the proper direction?
