Do you get more than a few Hummingbirds visiting your feeder? I run a feeder and it took 2 years for the Hummingbirds to show up. My feeder is out but I have not seen any of the birds yet. I live in a suburban setting and the closest tree canopy is about 500 feet away from my yard.

Nice looking Tacoma. I like the black EX Cabs.

Nice post Mark. Hotel and food service industry are great life choices for the younger generation. Definitely hard work and can be stressful at times. Good chefs are in demand.

Today is my third follow up eye doctor's appointment after my eye surgery. I should have a prescription following the visit today. Using my bifocals to read is a real pain in the butt. Anyone used Zenni for on-line purchases or used Costco? I am leaning towards Costco because they accept VSP.

Wife and son are going out to a concert tonight. I have a small sirloin tip roast that I am going to smoke with a few prep steps I have been wanting to try. Going to use a Chipotle rub and inject. Trying to form a decent bark and still have the roast come out tender.

    Everyone have a great weekend.

In the summer I’ll get 1-3 of them every few minutes. Right now it’s about 5 minutes a sighting. They are most active just before sunset. If I put the feeders too close to each other, they fight and chase each other off. Use pure red feeders if you can and avoid any yellow. Yellow jacket bees like yellow. Humming birds will avoid feeders with bees. I run 3 feeders in my backyard.

That looks like a great day trip. Nice to get away from the population and enjoy a little clear sky.

A few rules of thumb with hummingbird feeders. You may already know, but here they are anyway.
NO DYE in the water. You have to change the water if they aren't drinking it, at least every three days. If you get mold in the container you need to wash it thoroughly. Mold can kill the birds. If the birds aren't drinking enough to empty the container every two days then the container is too full. Hummers like something to perch on close to their water. An overhead wire, a fence, some kind of yard ornament, or tomato cages.
Spring and fall can be nuts. There are so many birds we fill daily (not full) as they are migrating. Not unusual to have ten to fifty (?) birds at any one time. Once the migration is over we get maybe ten birds that stick around consistently and we fill less full...

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Gals Have an ultrasound imaging for the legs today, right at noon. So, can't do much before, and don't know what I will do after.

    Quite the spread there, Mark.

We keep two feeders going, and they are busy most the day. But, Texas hummers will fight each other over everything - even when they have a feeder to them selves!

I've been using Costco for glasses for years. Only problem is the limited selection, but I've always found something in 2 or 3 visits.

Finally got one of these fancy pearl necklaces today. General ID used to get my by, but with these nuts falling out of LBR, I really need to know what I have in a nutsert, and what I need to replace the original. Because you just can't get a nutsert for everything.

    20220513_161045.jpg

Reduced from $60 to $20.99 for one day on Amazon, no way to resist! And my smile at being sure of what I was going to need to do when I use that nutsert tool thing for what I got it for just paid for this!

I don’t get nearly that many but I live in the middle of urban houses. I don’t bother boiling water for the nectar. I use cold tap water (so I don’t mix with softwater) and just stir until dissolved. 4:1 ratio of water and refined white sugar. Nothing else! I clean the feeders twice a week with soapy water and a carburetor brush in the holes. Never have had mold.

Changing the hummingbird nectar is super important. If not cleaned and changed often enough it will poison and kill the hummers. In general clean and change every 2 to 3 days. In temps 90 and above clean and change nectar no more than every 2 days.

It seems we have fewer hummingbirds than usual this year, and I've only seen males. I've only cleaned/refilled the two feeders we have, twice so far this year, but we were later than usual getting the feeders out. I guess males wouldn't be here, if females weren't. Bird flu may also be a factor, IDK.

Can't like that post Mike. It's good to have family around at times like that! My wife had elective surgery on her foot a few years ago, the pain part was very real. Her surgeon told her to keep the foot elevated above her heart as much as possible to reduce swelling, which helped with the pain. But looked like the dickens because her foot was on top of about 6 pillows!

Wishing for a quick and full recovery for your DIL.

    EDIT: :pccoffee:  everyone else!

TY, I make my nectar with no dye. We start the garden plant this weekend and there are cages for all the vegetable plants. This year I have installed a 4X4 timber to hang the feeder on that will also have 2 hanging baskets. I will remember to take a picture.

I was doing one thing wrong during the healing process. I should have been using the Cequa eyedrops so my eyes were not as wet as the ophthalmologist would have liked them to be. Otherwise, my eyes are doing well. I was not able to get a prescription for glasses because of the dry eyes. I do have an appointment for 3 months down the road. I thought the follow up exam went really well. One positive thing, my ophthalmologist is easy on the eyes, and she is really nice. Hey just because you are on a diet does not mean you cannot look at the menu.

Thank you, so after my eye appointment I went to Costco, one that I do not frequent because it is always busy and sort of understaffed. The Optical department was a disaster with only one person working and two other customers in front of me. Fortunately for me I took a number and the other two in front of me did not. I only had a question, so I was gone in 30 seconds. The power of reading signs and following them is powerful at times. Costco had readers on sale, a 3 pack for $13. I picked up a pack. The readers helped to validate my decision to have a pair of glasses made up for reading and computer work. Next time I will go to my regular Costco.

Ramp looks great. You should be able to reuse the lumber of the ramp when your DIL no longer needs it's use.

    Good morning Everyone!
We are supposed to be working in the garden today and there is some sort of blockage in the gutters or the downspout that needs to be cleaned. Should be a busy day.
