There's no way in heck I'd pay what people are asking for 2nd gens.

That would be nice. Are you being sarcastic or did you mean new 3rd gen?

When I made my purchase, the market was a little better but still bizarre... in a 9 month search of new and used, I found a 2015 DCSB 6MT with 40k kms for $40,000... this was a highlight the rest were not worth the time... I was surprised that new 2017 DCSB 6MT's MSRPed at $42,250 at the time... so with the fact I would get new, full warranty I figured the $2,250 extra was worth it.

Turned out even better when I did find my truck, $5,000 off MSRP because the dealer ended up with 3 6MT trucks they couldn't sell...

Personally, I preferred the look and feel of the 3rd Gen.

Good luck with you decision :hattip:

Oh, and if I could do it all again, instead of buying my '05 Corolla in '08 I would have bought a 1st Gen... but I have zero regrets with my 3rd gen.

Not sarcastic, a new 2nd gen would be awesome. But I guess it would cost more than a new 3rd gen in this market. If it’s really 25-30k for a 2012 with 100k miles, I’d probably skip that. Best bet might be waiting out the market a bit.

I wasn't even planning on ever selling my 2006, let alone in this insane market, but I bought it being totally unaware that they have head gasket failure issues. Mine hasn't shown any signs but I really don't want to deal with replacing the engine on it in another 20k miles

So far nothing to complain about with a 3rd gen tacoma, at least i haven't seen it yet. If you like some of the new electronic bs these trucks have, then all the better.
As far as buying used, i see a lot of bad luck from buyers i've met...usually your buying someone else's problem.

Not remotely worth it to buy a used truck for new truck prices.

Buy a new 3rd Gen man. You only live once. Plus it will feel like a big upgrade from the truck you have now. Personally I would never buy a used Tacoma. Like someone said you’re usually buying someone else’s problem but also the fact the used prices are practically the same as new. This was even true back in 2017 when I bought mine. Was looking for a used 2nd Gen, but for a few bucks more I could get a new 3rd. Easy decision.

It cost less to keep a good truck than purchase a new one, make payments into your savings account and you will have ready money for any repairs.
Keep your current truck in top shape with excellent maintenance including changing the antifreeze, it protects the head gaskets.

Yeah I’d replace the head gasket if the issue appears. Save your deposit money for it

You want to spend $30-45k on a new truck, instead of a potential $2-3k repair on the chance your headgaskets might someday fail?

It's just a gasket. Not the end of your truck's reliability, nor the engine's demise if it goes. For the record; the head gasket on bank 2 of my truck did start to go at 180k miles. I replaced both head gaskets and have at least 20k miles on it since then with zero issues.

If you want a new truck, buy a new truck. Just don't base your decision on a TW scare tactic of the potential of a gasket failure. With that logic you should be sticking to bicycles and public transit, because every vehicle ever made with an internal combustion engine can suffer a head gasket failure, regardless of how well it was designed or maintained.

A 2006 with only 100k miles. Keep it!!!! Even if the head gasket issue rears it's head, who cares. Fix it and move on. Now if you want a new truck, because you like them then I get it.

oh, and skip the 2nd gens, they are the ugliest of the three gens. :D

    Sound advice.

I'd save at least $2K for the repair in question.

Saving more would be better. :)
