eeehhhhhh ... I am nit-picking, but 2 phase is a thing (true two phase is no longer used) but 2 phase is also used to refer to a 3 phase system that has had a leg dropped for single phase end use.

Single phase, 3 phase, and 2 phase (3phase system supply single phase equipment)

I have 480V 3 phase and about half of my drops are IEC 309 pin and sleeve connections wired 2 phase (1 leg dropped so I can run my single phase machines from my 3 phase source)

 

As tedious as it is, I think I have to go back to the cutting wheel for the coupler.
Can't figure out how to use the plasma on that shallow of an angle.
Might burn up a $10 grinder. It's too hot to touch right now

 

Depending on the plasma you have, you can use gouging nozzles instead of cutting nozzles, low amp gouging can be very controllable. Hypertherm offers both max control gouging and max removal gouging comsumables for their powermax series.

 

I always use a porta band to cut the coupler just in front of the welds. The recesses welds will have to be cut with a plasma or cutting wheel or a combination.

 

I have a porta band but I'm not quite following you.

 

I have the Lotos off Amazon. Never heard of a gouging tip.

 

You can try lowering the amperage and reducing the air flow to get a gouging effect, but proper consumables and programming are the only way to get good results.

One of the drawbacks to the cheaper overseas machines is the lack of features. I believe Everlast has recently added a gouging feature to their machines (40 years late to the party).

Straight gouge and U techniques (video below) are the only ones that ever worked well for me ... the others are .... trash.

Lay the ' band across the full width of the coupler. You will be cutting slow because you are using the full with of the blade to cut the coupler. You will be able to feel it quite easy when you get thru the coupler . Stop cutting when you hear/feel the change in cutting so you don't cut into the tongue iron.

 

I'll try to post a pic tomorrow. It's one of those jobs that is a pain no matter how you do it .
