I miss Oldsmobile. One of the worst decisions General Motors has made is ending Oldsmobile and Pontiac production.

By the time they pulled that lever the cars were nothing but clones anyway. I'm watching BMW go down the same road these days -- it's all about selling more vehicles, driving enjoyment be damned.

Ford 427 "sock" in a period gasser.

GM cars were all clones in 1968. And more or less both earlier and later. But the last years of Oldsmobile was them trying to recreate Olds as an innovative luxury car instead of an innovative muscle car. The Aurora was certainly no clone. The Alero, Bravada, and Silhouette not so much. Basically Olds trying to compete with Buick instead of maintaining their already established identity. The same for Pontiac. I'm betting Cadillac gets the axe next.

But at least in 1968, each GM division still had their own powerplants. But I tell you, people were loyal to their division though. My dad, who was a mechanic and paint and body man, really wouldn’t consider anything but Pontiacs. He said Cadillacs were overpriced, Chevrolets were too cheap, and they always experimented with Olds. That was his concept from growing up in the 30s. So he was loyal to his Pontiacs. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure why he didn’t consider Buicks, but for some reason, the didn’t make the cut.

I don’t think so. Slicks and wire wheels were pretty much confined to the drag strip. Wherever it raced, I’ll bet the combination of horsepower and short wheelbase made it a handful to drive.
