I just purchased my 2001 Tacoma and I was wondering if anyone could provide me some links or information around the AC unit?
I’m wanting to get into doing repairs myself and I’ve never worked on a vehicle before, not even an oil change. Would starting with the AC seem too difficult for a first project?

If you are just beginning to get into vehicle repairs I wouldn't reccomend getting into the A/C system as a first project, there are procedures that should be followed and tools you will need to do the job properly as well as needing basic knowledge of refrigeration systems and pressure readings.

I'm not saying it can't be a DIY project but it's definitely not one for beginners as you can end up costing yourself alot of money if you make a mistake.

I by all means support people fixing their own stuff and learning how to fix their own stuff but the refrigeration system is one of the things that's better left to a professional unless you really know what your doing.

All that being said welcome to the forum.
What kind of problem(s) are you having with your A/C?

You can at least verify if the compressor clutch is engaging or not. Thats a good start as any.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I don`t think getting into AC service should be your first learning experience.

Get used to the vehicle over all first.

Like was said AC is not beyond being done it just takes some understanding of the theory a Set of Manifold Gauges a Good Vacuum pump A temperature pressure chart . Schematics of the vehicle your dealing with. Keeping it very basic!!!

It most often comes down to electrical or mechanical problems finding the problem gets interesting since the Evap Coil is kinda buried under the dash

    Yeah,

    A/C might be tough for a first-timer...

Search YouTube for Timmy the Toolman. He has a video on recharging the A/C system on an early Tacoma/4-Runner.

here it is: Air Conditioning Recharge - YouTube

BTW, Timmy has a lot of great videos related to Tacomas, etc...

I am mechanically inclined, but had never played with A/C systems. My new-to-me 95 Tacoma needed a bunch of A/C parts replaced ( condensor was broken, so I replaced the compressor, lines, receiver/dryer, Evaporator, POA?).

I "rented" the tools from (O'Reilly's (free rental), and evac'd and recharged the system last Spring (2021). Been warm here the past few weeks, and the system still runs cold a year later...

Change your oil first, then the trans oil, ball joints, coolant, use a turkey baster to take out the old fluid from the power steering and brake reservoir and top off new. An ac is doable as a first but i worry u might get discouraged and itll detract u from ever trying to wrench

    What he said ☝️

Start with doing all the basic preventative maintenance - fluids, filters, etc. Not only is it an easier (and cheaper) way to get acquainted with your new hobby.. I mean truck :p, but old air con sometimes will just work better when all the other systems are doing well. If the oil is old or coolant is low the engine runs hotter and it makes things just a touch more difficult on the AC. What symptoms are you experiencing?
