I have to add that to the list of the 4 biggest lies.
    1. The check is in the mail
    2. I’m only gonna put the tip in
    3. I won’t come in your mouth
    4. I’ll stop if it hurts
    5. We are no longer tracking you

    True, indeed!

SWMBO bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max. The power-Off action does not truly turn it off. It leaves enough software and radios (BT? UWB?) running so that Find My still works.

The prompt to truly power-Off the iPhone is in a very small, grey-on-black font that is easily overlooked.

I wonder what Airplane Mode leaves running?

Not really, any car built after 2010 does the same exact thing. Just how the world works now. If you wanna opt out, go for it. Just doesn't change the fact your being tracked/data mined on every other electronic you use.

    > Your phone, tablet, computer, alexa, ring doorbell, ISP,
    > Cell phone provider, hell even a tesla.... all collect 100x
    > more data than our trucks do.

For the vast majority of people, this is very true. They are
pleasant muggles who mostly don’t know, what they don’t
know. The non-govt surveillance economy (data brokers) is
huge … and the feds love it because it is the fig-leaf of
plausible deniability. Bluntly; the feds use our tax payments
to buy their way around the Fourth Amendment. This is nothing
particularly new. DHS and other agencies have been spanked
by Congress and the courts in this regard.

Many prophets of privacy are false prophets. I consider myself
a reasonably informed, retired techie, industry insider. My opsec
is “moderate.” I am guessing it was Toyota or the cellco that
Toyota pays for DCM connectivity. I hope that Toyota is truthful
about no longer collecting and selling my data.

The John Oliver bit posted earlier is the single best summary
that I have seen. Another shorter, fun moldy oldie:

Do you have the Toyota app on your phone? I'm pretty sure 19 and previous trucks dont have the ability to send data back to toyota over the air. It had to piggyback off your cell data to do anything.

Connectivity out ranks Reliability in consumer surveys. Today's products, automobiles being one example is proof off what is important to customers.
