Budget 5-lug rear disc conversion/kit

I installed rear disc brakes onto my ‘96 5-lug. I’m happy with the results so I figured I would share it. My truck had the V-6 rear axle (I don’t think this matters)

I used Sky Offroad brackets ($104), a pair of 1985 Eldorado rear calipers from eBay ($150), and rotors from a 2014 Cadillac ATS from Amazon ($75).

The Sky Offroad brackets are for a 79-95 Toyota Hilux 4x4, but they fit 1st Gen Tacomas (I run them on my 2001 Tacoma 4x4).

The calipers come with pads and a short flexible brake line. The fitting is 3/8 inverted flare. The stock brake lines could be cut and flared. I elected to buy Sky’s stainless flexible brake lines.

The rotor was the tricky part. The closest fit that i could find (to the Chevy truck Rotor that the 4x4 trucks use) was a 300mm front rotor from the 2014 Cadillac ATS. The Caddy bolt pattern is 5x115, but it is close enough that it installes without modification.

The only modification that was needed was to sand down the axle flange. The stock diameter is about 152mm. I had to sand it down to 148.6mm for the rotor to clear. I made it a close fit to the rotor, so an alignment ring was not needed. Anyone know of a better rotor?

Later on, I will install a Lugnut 4x4 parking brake cable. I used them on my 4x4 with good results.

For me the easy rear axle disc brake swap was swapping in a rear disc brake 4Runner complete axle !

All off the shelf Toyota Parts if anything fails The parking brake still works. some fabrication at the intermediate lever needed

Just a simple matter( for me) to remove the coil spring parts and weld on spring pads for leaf springs.

 

I can't weld so this is a great option for me. and it's only been7 months. not too much of a blast from the past and a lot of 5 lug people (including me) really want this option.
