All, could someone tell me if these lights are considered TRD Pro, Sport, or something else?

they have the smoked chrome housing or lens. I'd like to know the correct description. They're definitely not the clear lens.

    3) OEM 2012-2015 TRD Pro headlights (optional cosmetic upgrade) - Made in the USA:

    Right #81110-04221
    Left #81150-04221

    Thanks,

Those lights come on the 2015 TRD Pro, and are often referred to as Pro assemblies. I’m unsure if they came on earlier TRD Sports, but seems likely as the 05-11 smoked assemblies were on the later TRD Sports. Part number is the most accurate method for identifying the correct parts.

    Thanks crashburn.

I bought these in March when I was planning to do the harness upgrade but have since decided to sell my Tacoma.

I listed these FS in a different site, described them as TRD Pro and was called out by someone that they are not TRD PRO. If my description is wrong I want to correct my mistake. I guess I can list them as Pro only?

At the time of purchase the dealer site read (Tacoma Headlamp Assembly).

Dealer site listings can be very generic. If you want to play it safe you could call them TRD smoked chrome assemblies. They only came on TRD trucks, including but possibly not limited to the TRD Pro. Calling them TRD Pro assemblies isn’t inaccurate in my view though. A few more posts (50) and you could sell them in the FS section on this site.

Thanks again. I asked the dealer at time of purchase and they said trd pro.The push back from the other person is because these do not have the blacked out housing they’re not TRD. He claimed to have the TRD PRO headlamps and i guess he felt compelled to call me out. Oh well!

Clearly i am no expert in this area and want to be sure I identify them correctly.

I will update the other site to read Tacoma OEM smoked chrome assemblies. If it reach my 50 post count here I will list in the TX classified section.

    greatly appreciate your responses.

I want to say that the smoked assemblies came with Sport models from 09-11 on the early 2nd gens. From 2012-2015, they came with the Sport, and later years, the SR and Pro models.

The dealership websites might claim that the smoked headlamps might not be compatible with certain models, but they are. (Such as saying the 09 smoked headlamps won't fit an 08, simply because they weren't available at that time)

The smoked didn't come on the TRD Sport in the 12-15 as a standard. Maybe it was an option, but my 15 TRD Sport did not come with them and many other 12-15 TRD Sport's I see on the road didn't either. I believe it was only on the Pro and Baja models in the 12-15 body style. I haven't researched the 05-11 body style, so I have no clue.

Sounds like the other person is thinking 3rd Gen, not 2nd Gen. 2nd Gens didn’t have a blacked out housing, the smoked chrome was the rough equivalent since so much area in the 2nd Gen assembly is the reflector.

Possibly. I didn’t indicate 2nd Gen in my FS and have since updated the info. I should have put 2nd Gen, to begin with. My mistake.

    agains, thanks all!

The last 4 digits of the part number for the 05 - 2011 has been changed to 04173.

    OEM 2005-2011 smoked headlights:
These are like the Pro lights, but came on select Sport models. These are the updated TSB version of the lights that do not have the melting DRL issue. TSB is available here

Yes, sort-of. It appears Toyota is now selling the old assemblies with the melting DRL issue as noted in the TSB and not the newer fixed lamps. It is unclear if this is a temporary supply chain issue or a permanent change.

    Thanks for the clarification.

I bought a set so when and if they crack again, I'll update the thread. If the problem that is known to them is not remedied in the new part, it's very odd corporate behavior. I work with a group of attorneys who've certified a number of class actions and this is exactly what they are looking for. A known consumer problem not remedied by an action by the corporation. The acknowledgement of the problem is rarely so public.

The TSB in the link is Toyotas official documentation of the defect in the part. You can see where they document it should be replaced with the newer part number. They replaced it for free for a while, but that period has passed. If you run LEDs in the DRL it will likely prevent the melting issue. I’m not a fan of the solution, but it should work. It is unclear why they have gone back to the old part other than there is no supply of the newer part.

I am considering switching mine over to run without DRL when I install the new head lamps. I was fortunate as I am just now having melting issue on my ‘11.

If you have the updated lamps it shouldn’t be an issue. If you have the older lamps, then switching DRLs off or using LEDs would be a workaround.

I guess I was lucky mine didn't have DRLs. I actually still have those little lenses from my original headlamps.

Unfortunately I was unable to get the update. I ordered right as the TSB went on back order. I don’t have option to turn off drl unless I turn on headlight. How do I avoid hyper flash with led?

There are several flasher units that will solve your hyperflash issue when you go to LED bulbs. There are also a number of LED bulbs that promise to avoid the hyperflash issue - LASFIT makes one for instance.

You can also sand/dremel down the resistor in the turn signal box under the dash. There is a thread somewhere on that, just need to take material off slow and test a lot. I did this on mine after I changed regular bulbs (like for like change)and I saw some melting and immediately took them out, so I have some discoloration, but not a full burn, and replaced them with leds which hyperflashed. I have retros, so do not want to replace the HLs themselves.

I bought a new turn signal box and modified that one in case it didn't work or if I wanted to go back to stock.

    But, it is an option.
