Had a very new and interesting thing happen to me on my camping trip this weekend. I broke camp on Friday morning leaving a propane fire pit, shovel, axe, saw, and large table in the middle of the campsite. We were gone for a large portion of the day and got back sometime in the evening to a couple in our camp site with their tent setup. They even had stuff on our table.

I pulled up to them and the guy points at a different site and says "that's the only one available". I was just dumbfounded. This couple thought they "hit the jackpot" and someone left all this gear for the next patron.

To top it all off, I had left my traction boards on the ground where I used it the night before to level the truck. I asked the guy about it and he said he never saw them. Good thing they were the cheap ones.

So I had one set of people steal our campsite and try and take all of our shit. And another person walk into the site and take my traction boards.

 

Oh dang, I'd better get up there before those Rainbow People set the entire area on fire.

 

Dang, sorry that someone stole your boards and "uneducated" people took your site.

This is why I don't always take my truck camping on trips where we have to leave camp every day. For those trips (usually weeklong climbing trips), we take a ground tent and the less expensive stuff and only leave out the tent / cheap table to hopefully signify that the site is taken.

Maybe consider a cheap tent to throw down for these occasions to claim the spot when you will be gone for some time.

Never have had issues before but you might be right. I have cheap popup tent shelter thing I may start to use. Best part is it was a Turd Pro LOL. Sorry if you are on this site but that was baffling.

Would recommend this. Using my RTT I pack up everyday (which sucks). But I've been bringing my old backpacking tent to "Mark my territory" worth the trouble when it comes to reading that story.

I was gonna boot them but I was already messed up in the head. I had done a water crossing kinda fast whilst showing off my bravado to a scared T4R with a dorkel just before I got to camp. For some reason my truck went into limp mode after the creek and I was going through a moment of panic. Check engine flashing and truck refused to go over 2-3k rpms. I turned off the engine, made sure everything was okay and I didn't get water somewhere it shouldn't have gotten. It started up just fine with no issues.

I wasn't in the mood to wait for them to take their time moving their crap while I watched and waited (not knowing if I was going to be able to drive home). They did bring us most of our stuff though.

 

So many people just leave shit behind. Hard to tell if the site is trashed or occupied. Sucks that it happens in either direction

When I knew I would be out wheeling during the day, I have taken my old beater tent on camping trips specifically to leave it at a site and mark my territory.

 

Cheap pop up tent would be my two cents.
