    Day 2

Day 2 had us up early after a cool and breezy night. It was about 40* this morning, pretty chilly for us Florida boys who were already getting used to summer weather.

We had a very scenic drive off of Trey Mountain and took a short detour into Helen, GA to grab some supplies. Then we headed west, back on the route. The first part of the day was through the Coopers Creek wildlife management areas on some really nice FS roads. We only saw a few other vehicles all day, it seemed like we had the place all to ourselves.

    upload_2022-5-6_19-53-42.jpg
Helten Creek Falls was just a short hike off the route. As it comes into view it looks about 200’ tall.

    upload_2022-5-6_19-57-44.jpg
As you get to it, you see it’s actually 2 cascades separated by a short rock chute. The lower falls would be a fun water slide.

    upload_2022-5-6_19-59-52.jpg
Except for that little kick out toward the bottom. That would probably launch you pretty good into the shallow rocky pool at the bottom.

Toward the end of this section the road parallels the actual Cooper's Creek that gives the area its name. This is supposed to be a really nice stocked and wild trout stream. It must be too early in the season because we only saw 2 guys fishing. :notsure:

We came out of the WMA and onto pavement for a few miles and soon passed by the epicenter of North Georgia adventure, Vogal State Park. I have camped here several times over the years with my son in Boy Scouts and most recently this past October coming back from Overland Expo East. I highly recommend it if you need a developed campground during your travels.

Not much of an entrance sign or view but a really nice state park and campground.

As we made our way back to the dirt into the Rich Mountain WMA we ran across an unexpected sign.

 Southern Hobbsquatch? Could this be a distant relative of @Hobbs? I wanted to stop and find out but the large, mean looking dog at the end of the driveway and the ominous warning kept us moving.

We quickly climbed back into the mountains and into the Cohutta Wilderness area were we had some nice 1 lane roads with great views since many of the hardwood trees had not leafed out yet.

    upload_2022-5-6_20-24-57.jpg
Trying to get a decent picture of the views through the trees wasn’t working.

    upload_2022-5-6_20-27-16.jpg
When we did come to an opening in the trees the view was nice but the clouds were rolling in and the light was pretty flat.

By now we were getting into early afternoon and the wind was picking up out of the north and had a cold edge to it. One bar of cell service got us a weather report of a low tonight of 35 with a 15-20 mph wind blowing. Burrr!

Looking at the map we decided to head to a nearby FS campground that was in a sheltered draw instead of finding a dispersed campsite high up along the ridge line. Just before the campground was a marker for a cemetery, of course, this means I want to stop and look around.

The Dyer family cemetery just below the summit of Dyer Mountain. The small polished granite stones are marking graves but have no information on them.

Thank you for your service Pvt. Cantrell

A few miles later we dropped into the draw for the Jack's River Field campground, a small FS equestrian campground. When we arrived there were several trucks on the creek side of the campground so we grabbed a spot on the opposite side. As we were setting up camp I realized the other trucks didn’t have tents set up and it appear to be a large family out for the day. Sure enough, as the sun was setting, they packed up and left. Randy and I had the place to ourselves.

Five dollars a night for a creek and a (very clean and stocked) vault toilet. :yes:I’ll take it!

After a long day it was time for a steak and an adult beverage.

After supper, Randy again struggled trying to light a fire in his fancy portable, forced air, fire pit thing. I kept offering suggestions but he kept trying to use charcoal lighter fluid to get his wood burning. Needless to say there was no fire this night either. Soon enough it started getting cold so I climbed into the truck for our coldest night on the trip. Once I had the topper closed up with just the sliders cracked for ventilation it wasn’t bad. I crawled into my bag and had a great nights sleep.

    To be continued.

Not this weekend, it's a little too breezy out there for me, hopefully I can go later this week.

I’ve been playing with my fly rod in the pond across the street, got some bites but haven’t been able to land anything. I was going to try a larger, easier to fish pond on my neighbors property but it rained it’s ass off yesterday so I’m sure it’s all murky and stirred up now. Guess I’ll try next week too. Think I need some different flies too.

Good morning John. Have a great Wednesday.

My busy Monday is turning into a busy week. I’m off to mow and cut down a tree at my wife’s business.

    :hattip:Morning gents.

Man what a week, mowing the yard at the house and my wife’s business. Cutting up a tree that topped out in a storm there. Fighting and cutting down a couple of Sega palms. I’m ready for the weekend!
