Bilstein 6112

I never took exact measurements but sometimes it appeared to have a slight rake and others times it would look pretty level to me. I prefer a slight rake personally. These 6112s only had few thousand miles on them so in comparison yours may have a slight bit of sag if they are 3-4 years old. I have a since traded the truck in for a 4Runner, hence all my past tense verbiage! Miss my Tacoma too btw!

 

thanks, its funny I was thinking of getting a 4R as well. Just kinda big for my needs. A little sag will make it perfect on 4/3 as I don't want that bro lean at all.

 

my early feedback, installed 6112/5160s plus HS 3LAAL in my stock '21 ORAC a week ago, set up to 4/3 (6 slot version). got 1.2" front, 1.6" rear, exact match side to side with 1/4 tank gas (plus Leer 180) Despite glowing reviews on here I had tempered my expectations, recognizing the power of confirmation bias.. However, the improvement both on and off road is transformational. roll and dive largely eliminated, very comfortable, best thing is after any type of input (bump, trough, whoops, etc) the truck now returns instantly to stable condition instead of oscillating on pitch or roll axis. Feels much better and safer to me. I was happy enough with the stock OR ride, especially on trail, but it now feels like a 40K truck should. Stance/visuals was secondary for me, but looks good too. Very happy. Also did ECGS bushing proactively and it actually eliminated a very minor barely detectable vibe through steering wheel that had always been present pre-lift, no vibes detectable post-lift, so if on fence on bushing I'd recommend it even for small lifts like this.

 

You won’t have bro lean on 3/4, i would have dropped down to 2/3 if mine did, not the look was going for.

4Runner is great, but I do miss the bed of my Tacoma and I personally think the Taco looks better, but it came down to me needing some additional interior space for my little boys. Got a great trade in value on the Taco and paid MSRP (good deal these days! Lol) so came out pretty decent on it. Actually got more for the Tacoma than I paid for it 3 years ago. About to install an Eibach 2.0 coilover kit and thrown on my wheel/tire set up I had on my Tacoma to it.

I replaced my rear 5100s with the 5160s over the weekend. the lower shock mount bolt thread was stripped on one side, so I had to pick up new hardware to finish up the install and be able to drive my truck to work. I went to HD and found some Class 10.9/10 hardware and used it on both sides. They didn't have the M12 bolt in fine thread, only coarse, so that what I went with. I used an M12x1.75, 60mm bolt, nut, and split washer, all class 10 or 10.9. The flat washer is class 8, as far as I can tell, I couldn't find a class 10 flat washer. I used blue loctite on the nut. Pics below. the bolt and nut are not flanged like the factory hardware.

My question is if this is good to keep in there permanently? Or should I order the bolts, washers, and nuts, from toyota using their matching part numbers?

 

Got my original 6112's installed in Dec 2018 I believe, last few weeks my alarm kept going off in my driveway for no apparent reason. Found a small piece of jagged round steel in my driveway. Turns out my coils are practically disintegrating while just sitting there & each time another part fractured, the spring pressure slammed up & set off the shock sensor. Anybody else have 3 or 4 year old coils fracturing like that? Just got the new Bilstein HD coils & UPCA's put on. Sitting at 22.5 wheel center to bottom of fender, seems to be about the same on the 3rd clip with HD coils as others were getting on the 4th clip with original Bilstein coils.

 

The lighter original ones were falling apart.

 

I'll try to get pictures up later today, recently had knee replacement & getting around rather slowly.

 

^^^WOW! I have never in my life seen a coil break. But Ive also never seen some that rusted either. That said, I am in SOCAL so I have no snow or salts.

 

Yeah, I'm in the Canadian rust belt, about 5 minutes away from Buffalo NY.
My truck hasn't been abused at all. Last time I went wheeling was summer of 2019 & it was fairly mild stuff. Anything with a 32+ inch tire could make it without much issue, no extreme articulation or anything. Since then the Covid lockdowns prevented much more fun, for me at least.
Was hoping for a good summer this year & guess that can still happen if I heal up quick enough.
Was not expecting this, so I thought I'd ask the group if anyone else has had a similar issue.

 

Is that just from salt on the roads or some other reason? I've never heard of coils rusting to the point of breakage. Has anybody else seen this before?

 

Sounds like a bad heat treat.
Or someone at one time heated the coils up to stretch them out to lift the vehicle. We used to do that to lower ours and over time they would finally sag all the way down or break.

 

It's just surface rust, doubt it had anything to do with the failure. I'm thinking either a bad batch of contaminated metal during production, or a mistake made during the heat treating while being coiled.

 

Coils were installed as received from Bilstein, no heating involved as far as I know. My local Toyota dealer did the install & they use a suspension spring compressor to put it together. Can't imagine there would have been any reason to apply heat on brand new components.

 

Bad heat treat. Contact Bilstein. Even out of warranty they may help you out.

 

4 year old 6112's lowered from 6/5 notch to 4/3. I thought it was going to be lower with the settling I had over the years, but it pretty much leveled the truck. What do you guys think? I don't love the level look, so I might just try and go down to 3/2. Question is, would I need to get another alignment? I might wait a bit if so.

 

Hey guys, I seem to remember that some get higher-than-stated height measurements. I've had mine for 3-4 years installed, and just got the front lowered to 4/3 which is supposed to be 1" higher than the stock (21") height. I just measured mine at ~1.3" but its hard to get an accurate measurement at the same time. I do remember when I just got them on at the 6/5 setting it was higher than 2" as well. But even settled over the years and recently lowered to 4/3, it still seems to be higher than the 1" they state. Is higher numbers normal with these as I seem to recall reading about years ago?
