Weird issue 2019

Ok, apology for the long story, and I’m still confused.
End of last year I bought a used 2019 TRD OR. It had factory TRD Pro 17” wheels.
When I test drove the truck, I noticed a little vibration and told the salesman that the tires needed balanced. It was the end of the day, and I told him I would run it back at a later date, and have it done. Well, I was busy, and just lived with it due to the dealer being a long way off.
Fast forward to two weeks ago, I was washing it, notice there was two lug nuts missing on the passenger rear. So, I run to The auto parts store, and take care of that.
It was time for an oil change, so I take it to the local Toyota dealer last Friday, not the far away dealer I bought it from. They do an oil change, rotate and balance the tires, and I told them about the missing lug nuts, and asked them to torque them properly. Well, half way home, about 12 miles or so, it starts vibrating again. Now I’m getting mad about it. I called the dealer when I got home, they said to bring it back this week.
Fast forward to Saturday, I checked the lug nuts, all seemed tight. I took a short trip to another town, and by the time I got home, it was making a horrible noise, and I was missing a lug nut, and another was loose. I decided to take it to a local independent shop Monday morning, a guy I have known for years and trust, and he calls me and says....
These wheels don’t fit your rear hubs! He told me to come by, and he would show me. I went by yesterday afternoon, and sure enough, the factory TRD wheels, will not slide on all the way against the hub. So, they never tighten up square against it. I have owned multiple Toyota trucks and suvs for decades and never heard of this. His quick solution is to put some 1/8 or 1/4” spacers on it temporarily so I can drive it until I figure out what to do with it. I called the dealer I bought it from, told the salesmen the story, and he said his used car manager would have to call me when he gets back to the office on Thursday.

Have any of you had issues with factory Toyota wheels that were too small to slide all the at back?
I am totally confuse by this, and wouldn’t have believed it if he wouldn’t have shown me. He says the axles and drums all appear to be square and he can’t see any issues with them, he thinks the wheels are defective. He has been a mechanic for almost 30 years, and is highly respected in my area.

 

Never heard of anyone having this issue with factory wheels, but doesn't mean it hasn't happened to someone else. Can you post some pics of the wheels and the fitment? Can you ensure the wheels you have are OE Toyota part #'s and not some cheap replica someone slapped on there? Are they 4runner pro wheels? Tacoma Pro wheels? Are you using the correct lug nuts? If the wheel doesn't match up to the hub, I can't see how adding spacers would solve your issue; they'd then just not match up to the spacer. I'm clueless on this one but would love to see some pics. My best guess at this time is you may need new studs/someone super over tightened the lugs at some point, messing up the studs, and lugs won't stay tight now.

 

Side note, if you edit your title to something like "lug nuts falling off/wheel unmatched to hub" or something of that nature, your thread might get a little more traction. Typically, people notice keywords and will pop in to comment if its a topic they're familiar with. Also helps other members/guests when they're using the search function if someone else experiences this in the future.

 

I remember reading a while back about people having to grind the inside of the wheels to fit on the hub on some SEMA (17" TRD PRO) wheels. Not sure if it was just a bad batch or what but once they removed a little of the lip, they were able to seat fine.

 

17" TRD Pro wheels are usually 4Runner wheels.. Tacoma are 16" usually. So my bet is you have that one 4Runner wheel that has a different hub size and will not sit flush on the mount flange. I will do some searching... someone shared the part number to these wheels in a thread...

the solution; you should contact your original dealer you bought it from immediately. I don't know what kind of warranty or agreement you made with your purchase, but I would personally expect that they swap the wheels for a correct wheel that does fit, new wheel studs if needed, and refund you for all work you've paid to have done to address the issue. Good luck though.

The hub depth changed for the 2021 4Runner wheel, and it will not allow proper or safe mounting on the Tacoma mount flange without modification.

Well hell, I guess that explains it. Probably the one wheel that is too small. I’m about to rip into the used car manager where I bought it. I doubt they will do anything but, it’s worth a try to get it resolved. Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it, and I will update once I have talked to the dealer.

 

Just have them pay for 1/4" spacers and be done.

 

I wouldn't expect much from them, but I'd definitely have to give them a ring if it were me. The easiest solution, run the small spacers. The happiest unlikely resolution, explain to dealer, get new undamaged wheels, new studs, refund for your paid service hassles.

I can live with spacers.
I don’t expect much from the dealer, but I’m gonna try. It’s hard to believe the Toyota dealer didn’t notice when they rotated the tires. The independent mechanic said they noticed right away, and said he couldn’t believe anyone that deals with wheels and tires daily wouldn’t have noticed .

 

I recently purchased TR4 Sema wheels for my taco and I was worried about them not fitting due to some of the threads in here about that. I "think" the issue only pertains to the 21 design. Something about the hub size going from 106.1 to 106. At least thats what I think I read somewhere on this forum. The person who ran into this gently sanded his hub bore.

Id raise hell and tell them to get you some other TRD wheels that do fit.

 

It would've been awesome had you addressed the vibration on the date of test drive, for documentation purposes, but I understand that wasn't doable at the time. And for that reason, I wouldn't expect anything from them, bc they can easily push it off and say they don't have liability since it got pushed off for 1 year+ with "no issues". Luckily, there's an easy fix for it, but for my peace of mind, I'd keep a close watch on those studs. Lug nuts coming off aint no joke, and you want those spacers to be super secure.

He might be more inclined to help you out if you approached him with a polite "I have never seen this before, can you help me make it right" attitude rather than going in with your phaser set to kill...
