This backhoe is awesome. I’m super interested in getting something like this for myself and my brother in law.
What is the name of this type of backhoe? What do they cost roughly?

Anyone have experience with the Kohler Courage line? How many hours do they go?

Over 500 on the 17 hp single in my ZT, no problems, 2006 model.

The early models had issues with the top cover bolts backing out, I put blue Lock-Tite on mine the first year.
Blows a small puff of blue smoke on start up sometimes but still trucking. :fingerscrossed:

Getting the ITC membership knocked $500 off, so pretty much pre-covid regular price. Shipping was $96. Says there may be a lift gate charge, but I am having it delivered to my friends shop so he can unload it with his forklift and put it on my trailer. As soon as the break-in period is done, I'll add a thumb and upgrade the pump.

Where are you located? You could post in the "Anything Welding" thread and possibly find someone close by that would do it for you. (I'll post the link to the thread in a few)

All welded up. Thanks! I should probably shoot it with some paint to make sure it doesn’t rust right off tomorrow.

We ended up swapping the hinge mount so we could remove the gate if need be. Now I need to get an M8 x 1.0 tap to chase the treads and get new grease zerks.

Sorry I’ll take better photos later.

Let us know how useful it actually turns out to be. I can’t imagine something that light would be able to do any heavy work

I really wouldn't touch a Kohler Courage engine, especially a one lunger.

They seem to do pretty well for their size. Of course they aren't a full size excavator, but they also don't cost as much and wont require me to buy another truck and trailer just to haul it. Thankfully for me, the main usage will be in sandy loam soil with sporadic rocks smaller than 18".

Still might beat the heck out of a pick & shovel.

I'm looking forward to the review as well, you couldn't build one for the cost.

Head and cam issues. Now a Kohler Command engine, absolutely no issues.

I have some use for a small excavator but I have heavy clay soil. I don’t think that HF tow behind would have enough balls for that

Took about 10 minutes to unbolt the driveshaft from the 3205 just now. Looks like MTD did us a solid with the drive barrel plan. These are plastic barrels that isolate the driveline from shock loads and vibration.

Shortly before carnage ensued last night I had hung the brushhog on a tree and it stopped me cold with a pretty good yank. It was so stuck it broke one of the grade 8 hitch bolts on the hog. I fixed it and shortly after the driveshaft broke the drive barrels.

I am proud of this. I will buy 2 sets of barrels--one for each end of the driveshaft at a cost of $40. Whew! I was looking at a $300 driveshaft last night thinking I needed it.

This is the splitter I bought. I'm going to build it into a self contained towable. Not bad for $350.

    Nice!

I took an old water pump, a Troy-Bilt tow behind wood splitter, and a fast hitch prong and made us one.
