I want to take my Tacoma in for a 15k mile maintenance but that doesn't seem to be an option when scheduling through the app or website. It only seems to offer the 20k service.

Do you guys typically just schedule the 20k service early at 15k? I know you get 3 free oil changes and whatever else with "Toyota care" and I could change it myself and wait until 20k for the actual service however 15k maintenance does include Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD) and Re-torque propeller shaft bolt which isn't listed for 20k....

Whats the best route? Change my own oil for 15k mark, or just schedule the 20k now?

As far as I understood you get 2 free oil changes (10K, 20K miles)

However I am taking it in for the 5k/10k/20k service. And now I guess the 15K service. Milk it while you can.

I am changing my oil at 5K, 15K, and then every 5k from there.

They will change the oil at my dealer whenever you want. But the number of free changes stays the same.
I change my oil at 5k. I recently had 15k done at dealer. They also changed the cabin filter.
Nothing else was called out on the repair order iirc. There was no charge so I didn't pay much attention.

Toyota care is 25k or 2 years. The 5k, 15k, and 25k service is only a tire rotation and 24 point inspection. They also check your driver side floor mat. At 10k and 20k they change you oil and filter, tire rotation, 24 point inspection, and check the driver floor mat. Some people use their 2 free oil changes at 5k and 10k but Toyota only recommends it every 10k miles and that is why only 2 free oil changes.

This should tell you what all you will get with Toyotacare.

    https://www.toyota.com/owners/parts-service/toyota-care

Should be able to put in a vin and tell you what all services you get. They won’t do any of the lubricating or torquing the propeller shaft. It’s just like others have said with the inspection and oil & filter change at 10k and at 20k add the cabin air filter.

My app alerts me and will have a link to call them.

The maintenance schedule is not what they actually do but is recommended to get done.

15k is just a tire rotation and "complimentary checks." Toyotacare comes with 4 tire rotations (every 5k) and 2 oil changes (every 10k).

15K they'll rotate your tires and I believe change your cabin air filter.

Just had my 15k service. All they did was an inspection and check fluids. I had just replaced the stock tires with A/T's, so they didn't have to rotate them. This service is on the schedule and should be done if you want to maintain your warranty. If you skip it you just provide one more reason for Toyota to deny a claim if something should happen. Took all of 20 minutes, didn't cost a dime. Next service at 20k will include my last free oil change, then it's coming out of my pockets after that.

5 tire rotations because you also get one at 25k

Ah - I think back when I got mine it was only 20k. I could be wrong though.

I do my own maintenance on my cars, trucks and MC’s; my Taco hasn’t been back to the dealer since the night I bought it two years ago. Currently my Taco and one of my MC’s are under a factory warranty. I keep receipts for the work I’ve done on them. The only time I’ve had to prove work I’ve completed outside of a dealer was on an F-550 which needed engine repairs. Dealership originally said the truck hadn’t been maintained, I produced evidence that it had and they completed (thousands) in engine repairs under warranty.

I'm on my 3rd visit...when I schedule it sometime in July...I'll expect to be at about 13K since I hit my 1-yr mark this past weekend and currently have: 10,300 miles on my Sport.

I'll be doing my own oil change and installing aluminum Filter Housing + Fumoto valve.

These oil changing threads lately have been getting me ready to answer some questions & take pics with the two hoses (Fumoto & Filter Housing) making it a clean process.

I don't know if I want to let them change the oil at 20K miles since my Sport will have the newer parts installed--I know it's included in the Toyota Care but something tells me to do it myself.

Is that in writing somewhere? That a warranty claim will be, or possibly be, declined because you didn't bring it in for them to do? I'd like to see that if you can please. Thx.

I think it’s more referring to if you can’t provide evidence that the maintenance was completed outside of the dealer and somehow was diagnosed to be the part that failed.

I think the only maintenance you would have to do is the oil changes and I'd venture a guess you wouldn't even need that. A Toyota's engine would likely make 100k easily without an engine issue.

I just called directly and made the appt . They will perform the appropriate service once you get checked in . If you tell them 20k service and truck has 14k miles, they will simply do the next Toyotacare service which is the 15k.

Good explanation. Had to specifically ask for an oils change at 7k miles for my 21’ 4Runner. Taking it to 10k for 1st oil change seemed too long

In the RARE case that you skip the 15k service and something happens between that and the 20k service that could have been caught in an inspection... they would be able to use that against you in a warranty claim. Probably won't affect 99% of owners, but I've had to fight with dealers on warranty coverage due to similar issues with other vehicles and it's such a pain in the ass. Have to escalate to district service managers and further, when all you really had to do was make a 20 min stop at the dealership for your free service. Not worth the potential hassle if you ask me. Just follow the service intervals and get it logged.

I understand your point. I, like many other DIY'rs, do our own maintenance and do it within the maintenance window they prescribe. I have very exhaustive maintenance records supported with receipts and I don't do this because I think I might have a warranty claim. I do this simply to keep track of all the things I do so I don't forget.

I notice a few choices of phrasing they use on the document you referenced.

    • starvation or gelling. That's an extreme condition I've never experienced.
    • Toyota will not deny a warranty claim solely because you don't have records to show you maintained your vehicle. However, damage or failure caused by lack of proper maintenance is not covered under warranty. The maintenance is basically oil changes. Easy peasy.
    • Damage or failure caused by improper maintenance or repairs is not covered under warranty. How would they prove oil starvation like the OP in the other thread where the dealer caused an oil leak? If the OP did it he'd simply put oil back in to the correct level, make sure the filter o-rings seals are all good and the drain plug is good to go. They couldn't say it was because of your negligence. Let's also consider an alternate problem- oil gelling. Simply flush the engine, replace the oil and filter THAN bring it in for the problem. Again, they can't prove negligence on your part unless you bring it to them in that condition.
