Has anyone asked their dealer to check their tranny fluid when they do the free oil change? I know their first response is probably that it isn't necessary but just wondered if they will do it if you ask. They probably won't want to wait for fluid to cool enough to check it properly. I plan to ask in the next month or so. I have seen on here that transmissions seem to be low from the factory.

    This.

Does it drive and shift fine? If so then you're probably fine.

It is idiotic that these trucks do not have transmission dipsticks though.

Could do the check yourself its not to hard. Easy way of doing it is to add a quart of fluid it when its cold, put it into temp check mode with the thermostat pinned open, wait for it to come up to temp than drain off the extra with level check port. How much less than a quart you drain off is how low from the factory it was.

In 2016 most Tacomas with the tow package came from the factory 1 quart low (which mine was 1 quart low). I remember the service writer saying he was glad it was low so Toyota would pay for the job. Shifting was more smooth with the proper amount of fluid.

The maintenance schedule entries state, “Inspect and adjust all fluid levels”.

I just had my service done and on my Toyota paperwork everything they checked/adjusted had a green check mark next to the items.

Everything except ‘check transmission fluid level’ That was marked “sealed” and not touched. So no, mine didn’t.

They don't check it. It requires heating to a certain window, removing the check plug and then putting a new seal on the plug. I have the Platinum Service (and no I did not ask for it) and they have never done mine

I asked about this on my first oil change and the service tech said it is done during the 30k mile service, which is outside of the standard 2 year/25k mile service period and is something the owner has to pay for.

Keep in mind Tacomas 4.0 autos, '05+, did not have them either. Not to mention many other marquees have gone that way too.

    But I agree.

With all the folks around here claiming fabrication skills I'm stunned no one has developed a retrofit kit for a dipstick.

I think there is money to be made.

Yeah.. it's just dumb, its such a nice and seemingly simple thing to incorporate.

My MTX daily does not have a dipstick but every 30k you just drain and fill up until it overflows. Can't do that on this fancy trans.

When I first got on this forum there was a thread with people wanting to swap in parts from some other models that come with dipsticks but haven't seen it around in a while. Maybe it didn't work out.

If it's working fine, I wouldn't have a dealer touch it. You know what they say..."If it ain't broken, fix it till it is!"

I Wouldn't know, I service my own vehicles. I only take my vehicles in to address warranty and recall claims. Even if they offer a free oil change … no thanks.
