    Yeah.
Ha, genetically I have thick skin and stuff just doesn't bother me much these days (kidding).

I don't think those studies apply to me either, lol. I don't doubt that you can train for either endurance or speed, but I do think your genetic makeup can make you generally better at one or the other. As you said, you probably lean toward the things you are good at and reinforce that, but that doesn't change your genetics. I was the kid to beat in the 50-yard dash in grade school field days (those ended with the participation trophy era, I think), had the most stolen bases multiple years in baseball, and only one guy on my HS football team ran a faster 40. Most of that happened before I "trained" for anything in particular. So, I tend to think there's at least something to it. And then I discovered beer and none of it matters.

yea, some people are just better at different things. I think in most people their genetics are not the limiting factor, their lifestyle is. genetics only really comes into play once you've reached a certain point, which most people never will (myself included). That''s not a bad thing, we have other things in our lives that are more important than maximizing our physical genetic potentials.

well i mean, to be clear...athletes are literally training and setting their lifestyles for their chosen profession of...athletics. most of us sit at a computer all day and ride when we can. Unless someone in here actually does train every waking hour for biking.......

    Define ‘train’….

I recently picked up one of the Prestacycles right angle thingy linked in at the bottom of the page. Game changer for sure. After never really having much issue seating tires in the past, a recent set has had me swearing and sweating profusely (almost had to pop on the ol’ halo band).

Needless to say I’ll be using this immediately from here on out. I’ll happily hit the easy button if I’m at the house and a short stroll from the compressor.

Correct! the studies in humans have simply shown that the most elite athletes all have the same variant as @TenBeers. That, coupled with the functional studies in mice, is enough evidence to associate this variant with excelling in certain types of sports. Basically, it is a small piece of the puzzle for success in fast twitched biased activities.

yea, that's a good way to look at it, its just a small piece of the puzzle.

honest question, do you know if that variant is dichotomous? as in, it either expresses completely or not at all? or does it express in various degrees?

yea, that's kind of my point! haha. We've prioritized other things! which is great, not everyone can prioritize athletics. And honestly, if you're doing enough to stay healthy (which really isn't all that much) you're doing better than the vast majority of the general population!

@backcountryj I have that exact set up. It’s wonderful for the tubeless tire work.

Not to get too nerdy... But It's actually pretty interesting! The ACTN3 gene is exclusively expressed in fast twitch muscle fibers. In the general population there is actually a mutation that results in the gene being non-functional, whereas elite athletes (like @TenBeers :p) have retained a functional copy of the gene. This is the theory for why people with the functional copy have more fast twitch muscle.

I picked up this nice 30 year old Centurion frame and it is much taller than my Manhattan frame.
    ECCF2EED-D305-44E0-B1D6-32855DE3C53F.jpg

I gave $60 for the frame and fork with hardware and a nice rear derailleur. I gave him $20 for the 170 mm alloy crank arms and elliptical chain wheel set.

I want to transfer over most all of my gear from the Manhattan about this one and it should suit me much better.

get nerdy with me baby. :p

If the gene is exclusively expressed in fast twitch muscle fibers, would that mean that mean that something else is responsible for the proportion of fast vs slow twitch? or is that the gene that causes the fiber to become fast twitch during differentiation?
