I'm not saying I have a position in this, but let's remember that the drunk driver was the guy who was drunk driving and in the wrong, not StormTrooper.

You're right, however, he was in the wrong when he had the chance to legally bring the drunk guy down, but instead chose to worry about his truck.

Who heads up your PD Chris? Andy and Barney at Mayberry RFD? Drive anywhere intoxicated here, on your private estate, in your backyard, in your swimming pool... doesn't matter. You're wearing bracelets. Driving any motor vehicle, take a spin on your moped or in a 800 horse power custom Supra while you are under the influence to a degree that renders you incompetent of safe driving OR at risk of endangering others, including yourself and you're going to the gray bar motel.

Civilly yes. Criminally, no. Liability under civil guidelines for the OP's negligence in not calling it in, had it later resulted in injury or death to another person, could have easily cost him his living wage for years to come. Not a good idea to turn a blind eye after confirming the impacting driver was intoxicated. More importantly, a loss that could have been prevented.

Yep...it's better to report something like that instead of worrying about your truck. If that guy would have killed somebody afterwards you would have felt pretty bad...especially if it was one of your family members or close friends.

x2. Not to mention the people you put at risk for letting him continue that behavior. And, oh yeah, the "hit and run" that he got away with too.

x2 I would have turned his ass in. That was just plain fucking stupid. $40 vs. someone's life.... I could give 2 shits about my vehicle... No one around here takes kindly to drunk drivers. Be prepared to get a serious flaming on here....

edit: didn't read the entire thread. looks like you notified an officer about it. Next time, call his ass in when it happens. They can't do anything after the fact.

So wait...you say you don't know people...but you deliberately chased down some unknown dude who's OBVIOUSLY not in the right frame of mind to confront him over a mirror...but you were scared he'd come back and "get" you?

That's the most fucked up train of thought I've encountered in a good while...but hey...18 or not...mirrors are more important that human life...

There are good people who are paid and equipped with tools to deal with situations...next time don't wait till you're told the right thing to do...us cops are way better equipped to confront a drunk driver than you are...and well make sure the proper paperwork is filled out so that you still get reimbursed for that precious mirror
