I put potatoes in for the fall harvest. Peppers and tomatoes are still producing. Will give them another week, then add manure, top soil and put in carrots and lettuce.
Blackberrie tips nees to be trimmed and canes trained back into the pig fence.
Pick the rest of the figs. Not canning them this year, eat fresh and give away.
Have 2 new apples and 2 new pears coming in a month. We'll see how they handle fire blight.
This pic of blackberries is a year old. Now all metal is covered with canes. Should have a ton of berries next year.

I love how my Japanese tangerine tree fruits year round. These are always great snacks for hikes.PXL_20211120_194033367.jpg

This winter has been been colder than normal for my side of Virginia and feeling a bit more trapped than usual. Cabin fever has set in and the need to grow stuff is getting stronger. Found a little bit of an outlet in winemaking, but have only been at it for about two weeks. My parents home brewed their own wine from harvested fruits on our property my whole childhood but I didn't really pay all that much attention. Now I'm seeing the appeal :)

My first/experimental batch is apple wine basically using apple juice concentrate and golden raisins, and I'm about to do my 2nd racking tomorrow. I will move up to fresh fruit as they come into season, and I'm more interested in fruit wines than grapes. Does anyone have any sage, random advice for a newb who really wants to maintain a year 'round fermentation party? I know the basics, but I imagine there's some 'lessons learned' not found in books or websites.

Edited to add a photo. First batch on right and new batch started yesterday on left. The original batch has a SG of about 0.990, which I estimate is about 12%-14% ABV.

    Does anyone worm compost? Vermi-compost?

We now have a rabbit and have been looking into a green roof rabbit hutch that then has a worm compost below. This could be really beneficial as our soil, it is so sandy here the nutrients washes away.

Thinking something like this, but more attractive.

We got seed onions and potatoes yesterday. Will put them in the ground this week.
Ordered another truckload of gravel for raised beds. Plan on building 5 more 4'x16' beds, lumber prices be damned! It is easier on my back.

Need to plant 3 more blueberry bushes, another apple tree, 2 aronia bushes, take out sterile hazelnuts.

Pretty quiet in this thread for late April. Tomatoes and peppers are in the ground. Rebuilt the other box and have broccoli going from seed. That's a new experiment for me and I'm concerned they are off to a slow start.

Also planted 5 more Nellie Stevens hollies. That makes 14 total hollies at my house and the bees love those holly flowers.

Bush green beans and okra will get planted next week.

Looks nice! My wife and I were just talking recently about how we need to upgrade to some big, vertical tomato cages like that. We're still using the tapered ones and they just aren't cutting it with how big our plants usually get.

I like this one. Folds for storage over winter.

Put 6 blueberries in, another apple tree. Picking up first strawberry crop today.

Garden is going. We let our bunny out because the heat was stressing it out. It really enjoys its freedom.

A hornworm just about defoliated one of my tomato plants. I got out last night with a flashlight and couldn't find the bugger. Sprayed them down with Bt yesterday and no more obvious damage this morning. Anyone else tried Bt?

We use BT every other week, with great results! Worms are killer where we live. We try to have some refuse for them. BT when applied takes about 1-3 days for it to affect the worms, you have to catch the worms when the are feeding, otherwise it wont affect them.
