I'm headed up to Portland early june to get the SP installed. Wanted to make my way back home down the coast in about 5-6 days (Portland to SD). Does anyone have any recommendations on camp spots along the way? Trying to map out the route, and not sure where the best places to stop are. Thanks for any recos.

That was me! First Dodge RAM 1500 shortbed out the door (#254). Just updated the spreadsheet. Ordered 10/16/2020, installed 5/13/22. You all have been my lifeline during this wait.

This was the first production fit of the new bracket and it is pretty sleek. The SP team huddled around for the install, took pictures, and were excited about the updated brackets.

And the good news is, Spencer said he planned to offer to all previous x1 owners! Not sure if there was going to be a charge, but it was clear he wanted the upgrades available to retrofit. As you all have said, the SP guys are a great to work with.

Thank you all for letting me hang with you on TW as a RAM owner :) Happy to answer any questions.

Well.. they work. I'm going to change some things though for sure. Also I'm not 100% satisfied with the t-nuts. They work.. but they're not as user friendly as I had hoped. They want to spin slightly, but I was able to get them all centered and nice and tight. The mounts, have 3 holes total. I made them so it's one part that does both sides AND you could run the poles out the front, or out the top to avoid anything mounted off the back (thinking of when I run an awning). The angle wasn't the greatest for that option, so back to the drawing board. But now I'm thinking.. why not just make them out the top regardless, no front option, just to eliminate that potential at all. Just means a new design and starting over, but that's part of the fun. Any thoughts? I do have an idea to utilize the pocket next to the latches/grab handles as well.. a filler with a hole for the awning pole as well as accomodations for mounting auxiliary lighting, and possibly make them positionable.

I had issues with those tnuts spinning as well and found that the dimension in blue was too thick for the X1 rails. It protruded ever so slightly that the teeth weren't binding and was starting to damage the rails by torquing against them. I added a washer that was big enough to go around the square and then never had any slippage.

Test fit for my SP specific T slot nut went well. Sized to drop into the slot and rotate while tightening and locks into place. This paired with the locating spud on the backside of the mount itself should make for a easy and secure install.

I did the same trip when I picked up my camper. Gotta be honest, if free (legal) camping is what you're looking for, finding it can be a pain in the ass along the coast. There is lots of private property and private timberland in WA/OR where camping is not allowed and dispersed camping seems to be restricted on a lot of federal land. My trip was in February-March so everything was slow. It will be a lot busier in summer, though you'll be able to access roads I couldn't. A lot of roads had locked gates - could have just been winter closures. I stealth camped quite a few times when I couldn't find anything else, driving in late and leaving early.

I didn't plan my trip out at all, was mainly trying to hit up mountain bike trails along the way back so I'm sure there are lots of better camping options than what I found. It would be easier if you don't mind paying for campgrounds, although good spots that take reservations could still be tough. At least you can look at those ahead of time, might be worthwhile given your short timeline to get home. Here are some of the places I stayed that would be a good bet.

I went up to Port Angeles WA so I could drive the entire Coast Hwy. Lots of dispersed camping sites in Olympic NF above Port Angeles - both east and west of town. There are lots of DNR campgrounds and rec sites that require a pass sort of like our Socal Adventure Pass. Olympic Peninsula might add too much driving for your timeline but could be worth it if the forecast is good.

Florence OR. Horse Creek Campground - Siuslaw National Forest. Not free, but like $10. Some trails right there. Small campground less than 5 miles up a decent forest road.

Crescent City - open dispersed camping up Patrick Creek Rd off Hwy 199. Closest dispersed camping you'll find to the Redwoods parks.

Shelter Cove - Tolkan Campground (BLM) above town. Not free buy maybe $8. It's a ways out there and shouldn't be busy. Really nice area. You can get there also via a back way through Humboldt Redwoods State Park on Mattole Rd.

San Francisco. Was planning to stealth camp but noticed a ton of RVs parked along Lake Merced Blvd by SFSU. Tucked in with them, had no issues.

Big Sur. Not sure what the deal is with forest roads above Hwy 1. They are listed as closed but doing a bike trip through there last month we saw lots of vehicles on them, some camping, and some gates were open. Friends who have been there more recently said gates were closed. You could try these roads but I wouldn't count on them. Expect all campgrounds to be full even during the week. San Simeon State Park campground near Cambria might be an option but probably requires a reservation.

Santa Barbara. Easy dispersed camping above town on Gibraltar Rd and East Camino Cielo

Yeeeeah. same thing with us @evdog.., was interesting trying to find camp along the coast back to Phx. We ended up actually having to pay for a couple campgrounds along the way.. but did find a couple dispersed areas as well.. it was an even split. We are definitely accustomed to our massive amounts of open public and here in Az.. Sometimes our long Expo trips when unplanned, make for difficult and irritating times trying to find spots. Had an issue in Utah a ways back where we ended up doing our entire route in one sitting just trying to find dispersed camp spots.
