Hey guys had a cool idea. Had this old school speed limit sign that was in my attic for years, (we obtained it legally) and then up on my wall in my room for another couple. Decided to do something cool with it and made it into a skid plate for my truck. It angles down so no one would be blinded from the reflection but I’d hate to get a ticket for it. Does anyone know if this is legal?

Seems to me like a perfectly good reason for a police officer with a chip or a fragile ego to flex on you.
Not hating on police here, just saying.

Thats what I think. I might just put the old one back on and keep that for shits and gigs.

Put the original back on and stick the new one on over top with some 3M double sided tape and neodymium magnets. If a cop hassles you just pop it off and throw it in the back.

Aren't those reflective signs designed to throw light back in any direction the light is coming from? meaning that anyone who's headlights shined on it would get the light reflected back?

I'd remove in that case, and also just to avoid any potential problems. Wouldn't want to get pulled over for that, and then ticketed for a bunch of other things that might not be entirely street legal (uncovered ditch lights for example)

How was it obtained legally? The sign is property of the state and unless ur states governor gave it to you, I wouldn’t like to be caught driving around with it. Just my opinion and I have no legal knowledge of what I just said holds water. looks dope tho!

It was bought at a town auction a long time ago and then given to me as a gift.

Lol. That’s not a bad idea but I don’t think I’d trust tape and magnets to hold it in place while driving down the highway.

I own a commercial printing company and we provide street/directional signs to cities and businesses in our area so really any individual could buy one. They probably frown upon individuals installing it on the street like they’re the DOT though

that being said, most are printed on HIP (high intensity prismatic) vinyl and adhered to aluminum. It’s pretty dang reflective. Might want to test it at night before hitting the streets

This one is super old and doesn’t reflect much more because of the rust but even with the down angle you may be right. I went ahead and took it off but keeping it for maybe some cool photos or a plate I’m not afraid to beat up. And so probably should order some covers for those lights. I thought some would come with them but they never did and I haven’t gotten around to buying any. Thanks for the advice.

If it was from a state highway, perhaps, but many ways to get a sign legally. My uncle worked for a nearby rural county and was in charge of all county signage and painted lines. He was the guy they'd call at 3am if some drunken kid ran over a stop sign in the middle of the night and it needed replaced ASAP for obvious safety reasons. A lot of signs around here are just plywood base with a reflective layer, and he stuck the letters on himself. His dog houses for his hounds are made out of old signs he has taken down and replaced. I actually used to work at a plywood mill that made a type specifically for road sign usage.

Use it for one of the belly skids. Caution sign or something funny if you flop/roll it would be pretty cool haha

I'd run it on the trail but not on the street, like others have said..legally acquired and legal to run or not, it's a reason to get pulled over

This is a question best directed to your state's DMV (or whatever acronym your state might use), but my gut tells me what most folks here have said - legally obtained or not, it's an invitation for the local constabulary to possibly give you a hard time. Definitely like the idea of using it underneath, if only for the 'silver lining' of entertaining someone in the event you roll it at some point.
