The retractable takes like a foot I think of the bed space at the head. My recovery boards and a header rail wouldn’t be there if I went that way. But you do get the bed rack option if you were to ever put like a kayak

if you have a cap world near you, they have mini displays to compare the different options.

personally a soft cover is too inviting for perps to take a utility blade to it for my liking.. but I work at a safety net hospital and our garage is next to the shelter so a lot of homeless drug addicts nearby ymmv

The cool thing is (especially if you have a long bed VS a short bed) even though it uses space at the head of the bed, it doesn't go all the way to the bed floor, and you still end up with usable cargo space up there.

In my case it was deep enough to put my jumper cables, GoTreads traction boards and even my full ARB compressor kit

The OEM soft tri-fold has been great for my needs. Easy to use, durable, easy to clean, keeps things plenty dry, in fact I've not really noticed any leaks at all but I live in CO. It's easy to remove when I need the whole bed. I bet you could get a good deal on the used market.

I recently installed the X4s and like the super low profile look of it. Got a deal from one of the members here. Looked around and got quotes here and there.

It would suck for sure but all they'd get out of mine would be shitty boots and stinky saddle pads.

The only stuff that lives back there is what's too nasty to ride home in the cab.

I went with the Toyota tri fold and have been happy with it so far. Had the Retrax on my F150 and loved it. Really liked that you could lock it in any position. Only reason I didn't get it for my Tacoma was because of the canister. I was already giving up box space coming from the F150 and couldn't give up any more. Really good cover and Retrax's customer service was fantastic. Looked at the Bakflip but when my truck was coming in it was back ordered. Only issue I can see with the Toyota one is it only folds twice and you do lose that space behind the cab. But that will rarely be an issue for me. Most of the stuff I'm hauling is to and from the lake, for ice fishing or for travelling so it will all fit under the cover.

Forgot to add this yesterday. My other issue with the Toyota cover is that the tailgate needs to be open to open the cover. I back in my driveway against the garage and having to move the truck to get into the back is a pain sometimes. Not sure if that is the same with the other folding covers. I miss that feature from the Retrax. You could slide it open and access the box with the tailgate closed.

With oem cover limiting space with that last fold on the cover is its biggest issue even with the 6' bed i have that there are times i wish i could fold the cover 100% back. At least there's only 2 bolts to remove the entire cover. Usually if it comes to that i'll just chit can the whole bed idea, and hook up my 5x10 utility trailer.

+1 for Lomax have had mine for 2 years and still like new and takes under a minute to pop it off to have full bed use. Keep in mind I don’t think any bed topper besides a diamondback will really keep a determined criminal out.

    This ^^

Bottom line is all of them are probably darn good, but I do like my BakFlip.

I made a cover out of plywood. Painted it black. Stiffened the plywood with a couple 2x4’s underneath. Made up T nuts to mount it to the bed side rails. It’s hinges in the middle. Before lumber went up in price is was relatively cheap :). It keeps the snow out. And stuff relatively dry.

I had it for my 2nd gen. The 3rd gen is substantially better. Especially the fact that you don't have to open the cover to close your tailgate.

Mine came with an extang encore and I love it. Being able to fold it from the back is really helpful when things roll and slide around in the bed
