2023 SR5 Now Includes Push Button Start!

I have a key fob. Battery goes dead in my fob, I use the key and I’m on my way.
You have to go through some trick procedures lol:

Have a manual….therefore key. Wouldn’t mind having a push button start…would be a nice to have. Not sure why Toyota doesn’t have it.
Honestly, it seems like they’re trying to discourage purchase of manuals by not allowing buyers to purchase obviously desired options (dclb, push start / keyless entry, crawl control, etc). Does not seem to be any technical reason why these options couldn’t be paired with a manual…the adaptive cruise control allows me to shift gears and picks right back up when I let the clutch out, so what gives?
Seems like they just don’t want to offer the manual, so they discourage it and use the low % sales numbers as justification for eventual phase out. I guarantee if SR5, DCLB were still available in manual they would sell twice as many (still only 10% of total though)

 

i much rather have HID or LED headlight option across the board than keyless.... i had keyless issues with Nissan before so i do prefer a real key

Lol that would be way too expensive for Toyota and the owners of SR5s aren't looking for fancy stuff like that.

 

I don't get why people are bashing on the push-button start. It's quite frankly a QOL improvement? No need to pull out the key. Get in the truck, and push a button? What other concerns are there? Reliability? All my cars with push-button have started on one try. Sure some may prefer a turn-key because of the cool factor, but a push-button is causing people to go nuts? Come on... first world problems here.

Edit: I've never had issues with keyless entry either, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes, Audi, Land Rover. Nothing Just replace the battery every year or two and you're fine.

WITH a key:
You can start the car without getting in (no need to depress the brake).
You always have a key handy that fits the tailgate (not that little pull out key in the fob)
I prefer having a key

 

I was thinking about the cost factor of the push button start too. The current price difference between the SR5 and Sport/OR is only around $1900 so wonder if it will be even less for 2023.

 

You can start PTS Tacos without depressing the brake too... Add a power tailgate lock and never use a key again. Preference is fine but PTS is more convenient.

 

Not sure why either, some think it is a pussy thing. All of our tractors and heavy equipment were on push button. Though you did have a key too. You would have to turn the key, then hit the button.

 

I can easily do without push button start, imo, its more of a novelty. Toyota probably saved a couple dollars with it than a key. On nice days i do enjoy my power sliding back window though.

 

I recently had a rental that needed a key to start and you had to push a button on it to unlock the doors. I never realized how sorry I felt for everyone that still has to get their key out of their pocket. Every other Toyota pickup I've had ends up with broken locks and bad ignition cylinder and started with a push button and used no keys eventually, but it's nice to have that before the shitty seat scoliosis sets in.

 

Yeah, its a real tough chore to dig that key from your pocket...heck some might be shot for the entire day.

 

Or just replace the battery when you get the warning.

 

I wouldn't assume there is much cost difference if any, to Toyota for push button vs. key in the ignition. Just because they charge more for it as a package deal with other convenience and upgrade features, doesn't mean it costs more. I bet we are talking single digit dollars.

This is why their margin on the higher ends trims is better than the base model. They have little to no interest in selling you the base model. But the starting price gets your attention.

 

SX package should get black headlight housings, even if those are halogen. SR5 should have gotten the LED DRL halogens, when the full LEDs came available. All TRDs should have gotten LEDs standard.

 

I don’t find the taco’s PTS key fob large at all… Well I mean they have to be big enough to accommodate buttons, a board, and a battery right?

 

I'll add to this: it's great to get done with a bike ride or forget something in the car and not have to take my keys out of my bag to open the doors, or open the windows to air out the cab, or even to get going. Call it laziness, but the last thing I want to do is dig my keys out of my bag when I just want to rest and recover.

I wouldn't say I'd never use a key again, but there's just nothing like the convenience. Combine that with my keypad for my door at home and I never have to mess with digging for my keys again.

 

I got my Tacoma about a year ago but still have my 2004 Honda Element that my daughter is going to start driving soon. I drive it still 2-3 days a week to keep it running. I didn't care too much about keyless entry or push button start with the Tacoma. A year later, driving the Element can be frustrating. Not from a driving standpoint, it is fin to drive. It is needing to get the key out to open the doors! The fumbling with key to start the darn thing, etc.

Keyless entry and push button start are two things that I didn't expect to love, but I love them!

I just wish keyless lock worked better. I don't know if I do it wrong but I am only about 20% successful trying to grab the handle to lock the door.
