Method of correlation that the filter was the cause?

Not saying it wasnt, just curious how it was proven it was.

Fram tough guards and Ultras are excellent filters. The only one’s who comment negative believe what read on the internet. I’ve had excellent luck with Fram. Mind you I’ve used tough guards and ultras.

 

I use mobil 1 filters. I'm not wasting my time to go the dealer to get oem filters when I can get oil and a decent filter in one stop.

 

Nothing wrong with OEM filters. But they aren't made of the magic fairy dust that people seem to think they are. I have used them. But not worth the drive across town when Meijer (down the road) stocks Fram Ultras and M1s. So I snag whichever is on sale.

 

Blackstone Labs said years ago that they could find no measurable difference in engine wear among all brands.

We live in the age of modern oils where they are all good. Whatever someone's father or grandfather told them about oil and filters probably doesn't apply anymore.

"Cheap oils" like SuperTech, Kirkland, Amazon Basics, Harvest King, Meijer...among many other private label oils are all made by Warren. They have a long history of producing excellent products.

 

the difference is in how long they last till they need to be changed not in the wear stats, well they are made by the same company the additive packages in them can vary wildly.

 

All modern synthetic oils can easily handle the 10k mile interval that many manufacturers recommend under their "normal service" schedule.

When Toyota or any other manufacturer allows for a 10k OCI they don't say...."but only if you use such and such brand.

Ya they do say that.... they tell you to use the Toyota brand oil.

 

Actually they only mention Toyota Brand oil but follow it up with "or equivalent energy conserving" oil.

There's a difference between a recommendation and a requirement. They can not legally require you to use their oil

 

Page 571 of mine says to use Toyota approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil”

 

There are also multiple disclaimers in the maintenance section about how Toyota can't guarantee the performance or reliability of the the truck if non oem stuff is used. Its pretty clear that the oem oil is what they want you to use and that the oci was made with the oem oil in mind.

Perhaps if they could prove that a non OEM PART caused a some sort of failure. But they can not deny a warranty claim or claim that a non OEM fluid caused an issue as long as it meets the requirements.

And as far as OCIs. Toyota bases that on 2 things...type of oil and duty. If using a synthetic then under normal driving conditions most models are a 10k/1yr OCI....5k/6m under severe duty. Or 5k/6m for most conventional oil applications.

Toyota bases that on what their own GTMO oil is. For example, their 5w20 and 5w30 are conventional oils. So to play it safe, Toyota makes the assumption (in favor of the average person's lack of oil knowledge) that many non GTMO oils of those weights may be conventional and sets the OCIs accordingly. All 0w20 oils are synthetic. So other than the severe duty schedule, Toyota recommends a 10k/1yr OCI.

That's also why Toyota says 5w20 can be used in 0w20 applications, "but must be replaced at the next OC". They don't know whether that 5w20 that was put in is synthetic. And they would rather not have you running a conventional 10k miles.

How do you know all this? Work for Toyota or are you just assuming? You said "When Toyota or any other manufacturer allows for a 10k OCI they don't say...."but only if you use such and such brand." This is false, they clearly do call out a specific brand (there own) and tell you to use it, as do all other vehicle manufactures. Of course they cannot deny a warranty if you use non Toyota oil, this is for legal reasons, not because Toyota believes that all oils are the same or that they tested every single brand of 0w-20 in the world. They tested the OCI with there own oil and they tell you to use there own oil. The OCI is also a "recommendation" not a "requirment" does this mean I can do 20k mile OCI? yes it does. Does this mean I should? No it doesn't.

 

I paid less than $40 at my local service center for an oil change.
No idea what filter they used, don’t really care. The engine has oil in.
