Anyone know the reason why Toyota has designed the engine to shut off when you unlock your truck after remote starting it?

I thought that maybe it was only doing it when I put my hand behind the handle and it would unlock itself, but it also does it if I use the FOB to unlock it remotely.

It isn't a huge deal, just very annoying that I have to restart the truck after getting in it when I've had it running for a few minutes already.

I don't have it but it would annoy me. Also not a big deal for me to go in the garage and start it to warm up in winter

It's not for safety or to stop theft; it's just a shit design. Nothing you can do it about it currently unfortunately.

Seems like lots of newer vehicles are that way though. Makes me wonder if its some sort of mandate for some 'safety' reason.

I have not seen another vehicle with remote start do this. Now some of them will shut off after a predetermined amount of time, but that isn't what is going on here. I can remote start the truck and then unlock it immediately after it starts and as soon as it gets unlocked, it shuts off.

But I guess I was mostly just wanting to double check that was normal operation and there wasn't something wrong with my truck...lol.

They're not; it's a Toyota thing. And they know it's needed too. They've gone as far to admit and will be updating cars so it doesn't happen in to future models. Not sure if that will be backwards compatible though.

I think it is only an "issue" with the vehicles with a smart key. I installed a remote start in my sienna without a smart key and it doesn't turn off unless I step on the brakes without the key in the ignition. Opening the doors isn't an issue. On my tacoma, which has a smart key it'll die with the door opening. Same remote start system, not the OEM one but one made by Fortin.

Interesting. I think the company car at work does it, some Chevy pos something or other. And I think Dodge RAMs did that for a while though its been a while since Ive driven any of them

Either way it would annoy me too

I don't use the factory remote start for this reason.. which is annoying because it gets hot af in Phoenix. Might do an aftermarket setup that bypasses that issue and works properly.

If you find an aftermarket autostart capable of bypassing this you’d be the first, otherwise we’d all already have them

Most aftermarket remote starts/alarms will accomplish this.

Do you have brands or experience with any that do? I’ve searched here a bit and haven’t found first hand accounts

I don't have remote start so I can't confirm, but this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. Funny, I just rented a new suburban and it had remote start and it did stay on when unlocking and opening the doors.

No money, all went to truck...
safety. you remote start, your kids get in before you....mayhem ensues...

My wife's Honda does the same thing. Yes, an inconvenience at first but once you get used to it, it's ok.

I mean really, is this where we're at? Complaining about this stuff?

It is annoying. My F150 didn't do it, friends Jeep doesn't nor does my moms Subaru.

I looked and was never able to find one that overrode this "feature". Let me know if you do.

What year? My moms 2021 Subaru doesn't shut off when you open the door.

How is your kid getting into a locked car if you didn't open the doors?. It bothers me (I'll admit more than it should) not because of the extra work to hit the button just that there is absolutely no legit reason to shut the engine off when the door is opened if the key is present.

It’s a legitimate and common gripe that has been brought up countless times. You’re justifying it because it happens, not because there’s a valid reason for it to happen
