In 1977 i bought a new Toyota FJ-40 land cruiser for 5400.00 . I saw a 2022 Land cruiser at my local dealer the other day and was shocked at the sticker price of 120.000.00 dollars. Ugh
Who would spend that much and take it off road.

    Oh look, another mod....
The FJ-40 Cruiser is different from the Land Cruiser model that they sell today. There is a the FJ-40Cruiser (which they still make in 2022, but only overseas), and there is also the Landcruiser (which they stopped selling this year in the US also).

You aren't comparing apples to apples. But I get it, inflation and other add-ons to vehicles have made the cost eye popping.

That 1977 didn't have... GPS services with live maps and traffic data in the cabin. Airbags to lower your risk of organ death from collisions at 35mph. Cameras around your vehicle with radar in your bumpers to keep you from hitting things. Air conditioning standard. Remote locking, unlocking, and remote start in the winter. The list goes on.

$5400 in 77 is ~$25,000 today which is a basic budget entry-level car price without all the fancy crap. You actually get more for your money now. You can also still buy that FJ40 for about $25,000 too.

The land cruiser they last sold here is a luxury suv not a strip down of roader.

    What a transformation!

I wonder what kind of difference it would be driving a 1977 vs a 2022.

If your dealer is in Oregon I doubt it. I seen some 2021's at that price though, crazy since the list price was more like $85K.

Back in 1975, I paid $2,000 for my red FJ-55 "Iron Pig". I beat the ever living shit oit of this truck for 7 years and sold it for $500 when I joined the Navy. I cry every time I see what they go for today.

No if your rich your right its nothing. But for a retired guy its not even close to being affordable.

The 200 Series has all of those features, I don't know about live traffic. You're right the LC is a luxury vehicle, but the 200 series is one of the most spartan luxury SUV on the market. Which is a good thing, shit the Heritage edition included a 3rd row seat delete with an up charge.

Shiiiiiiit my knee grow, I can’t afford it either as I am a working class stiff.

My 3rd Gen is most I ever spent on a vehicle, had the money, but I sure don’t like spending it! My wife is getting real tired of me still bitching about it. lol! She was also tired of me constantly throwing money at the old truck to keep it going…kept on telling myself it is cheaper than a new one. Last year threw $6K at and probably needs another $6K tossed at it. She said “honey just give in and get a new truck…”

I’m there. My Tacoma is my first new vehicle ever purchased at 46 years old. I had been saving up several years after my previous vehicle was paid off and I had no car payment so that I had a big down payment to be able to get an easy to deal with payment. Luckily I got the truck before the Jeep became a major money pit
Some people have it and $120,000 is nothing for them. Good for them.

Things are not the same price to wage that they were when I was young. My 1970 Kawasaki H1 road rocket was 999.00 and i made 500.00 a month. A new H2 is 26,000. And i know some people make 13,000 a month but its not most working men. Just saying

    SG,

    you crack me up!

$32K back in 2002 was the most I had ever spent on a NEW vehicle when I was stationed at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. Of course, it was a family SUV...2003 Honda Pilot EX/Leather/DVD.

But, our kids are married adults now so it was time for their dad to get what he wanted...took care of the wife in 2017 with her First-Time ever NEW vehicle purchase: Elantra.

    Soooo, I splurged a little on myself...$40K threshold with a $46K blank check limit...I was out-the-door with a $35K note in May/2021.

You're like my wife, she hates to part with money...I'm all about spending it. lol

    But that doesn't mean I'm hasty with my spending...it's a well-thought out process...in my head, anyway...lol!

I too wish I had kept some of my cool cars over the years (73 Road Runner, 77 Trans Am, 81 Corvette). I guess we are not lucky enough to keep every car we buy like Jay Leno.

    Still thinking about it.
Maybe that is true, but I would bet that the profit margin on the new one is much higher as a percentage of the price.
