Welcome and congrats on the new truck!

For group outings and get-togethers check out this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-september-23-25-tw-tigerton-takeover.621460/

I ran the KDMax tune for a while and I liked it. Not sure who's in the area to install it though as I did my own. Probably find info here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/kdmax-pro-tune-by-paparee-and-twtaco.713699/

Thanks. Yeah, I sent him a PM earlier this morning and i'm going to try and meet up with him in June as he is busy for the next couple of weeks.
I'm going to try and join in on the Pipeline run or at least the afternoon for some trails. Hopefully I can meet with him before then. :D

    Looking forward to it.

So... I built a rack for my truck that included the ability to carry two bikes on the side. Cool set up that I saw some where here on TW, and I love how it works.

    7C426CE8-86E4-446B-BA9A-91C056075094 (1).jpg

Unfortunately, the last two offroad adventures where I carried bikes with me, they got damaged (notice handle bars in image above?.) As a result I have been looking again, more closely, at what others do to carry bikes and go offroad. I know that the solution is in the bed, but I hate loading and unloading every day because that is where we sleep. Since that is out, (because I'm stubborn) I created an add on for my "new" swing away rear carrier. With this set up I can add the rack or take it off and I can carry two bikes lower and behind the truck.

So far I like it; but, I am not sure its legal. Dang it! I moved my spare up high to get it off the swing away. Love the look and placement, but I had one of my students point out that it blocks the third brake light. Not really a concern in my world, but easy enough to add to the back of the rack. Unfortunately, with my fat bike mounted the tires also effectively block the regular tail lights. Sh&%$t!

The placement wasn't checked because I don't want it lower for approach angle issues. Bother. Bikes mounted on a rig doing challenging offroad trails is proving to be a challenge. I have another idea-weld a bar off the swing away that sits slightly higher than the tailgate, throw my Race Face pad on it and have the rear wheels in the bed. Still going to have to deal with the bikes morning and night, but solves the problem of the hidden brake lights. Anyone see another obvious solution I am missing???

How about a set of lites on the back of the rack powered by the trailer hitch wiring.

Get some fork mounts and hang them vertical from the rack

That is a good solution and one I had considered, but... The original problem is that the bikes are too high and susceptible to damage (mainly from trees or cliffs etc.) and this just puts the bars right back up there. I may revisit, but I am still thinking this one is a lateral move...

What's so funny is that I really wanted to get an 80 series after my 94 4Runner.

Then, that V8 4th gen 4Runner just happened to be available on a day when I was in the mood to make bad decisions. In the long run, it ended up being a good decision because that 4runner took us all over the place and I still miss it.

And then, there was the Tacoma, and now the 5th gen, which I do love. But, I still wouldn't mind an 80 series at all for a camping/off-roading rig.

It's awesome watching you get that thing dialed in. It's definitely going to be a really great balance of drivability, utility and off-road badassery!

    100%

Last year I went after an 89 Hilux and some clown outbid me by two grand. We were the only two making a move on it.

Then I had a chance on a 77 series Land cruiser here, but the money they wanted plus the work it needed... It just wasn't going to happen. If it wasn't leaking every fluid known to mankind I would have paid the money they wanted or, if they had knocked about 8 grand off the price and it was leaking every fluid known to mankind, I would have bought it.
