I'm going to re-gear my '09 Taco. No locker, stock 4 cyl. model. does anyone have Timken part numbers for carrier, pinion bearings? I would also buy the bearings from ECGS, but am outside the free shipping area and trying to save weight. TIA Cheers, Dave

Id just buy the full rebuild kit from ecgs. That 3-5lbs of parts won’t break the bank I would think and you’ll have everything you’ll need.

    Hope you post a DIY!

Revolution Gear seems to be the best. I know they have one, if not both, master install kits with bearings shims etc.

Look up ZUK @ gearinstalls page for DIY's. I believe for certain things he recommends OEM parts such as seals

I'm beginning to think that is the way I will go. Would you recommend the bushing that replaces the needle bearings in the front? Truck has 200,000k or 125,000 miles on it

Gear changes are not easy. it's a high precision job not for the vast majority of shade tree mechanics.

Do you have a dial indicator? do you know how to measure and adjust backlash?

Thanks for the heads up. I rebuilt this transaxle which presented some unique challenges and I've got great resources close at hand if I run into difficulties. A couple of machinists and some very capable mechanics. My biggest challenge right now is blowing the dust off my wallet ;-)

Translation: "It's too tough for me"

Dial indicators are cheap at Harbor Freight. Backlash is set with washers.

    Everybody starts somewhere

So much for all that! In the end I decided to get an aux. set of tires and rims for trailer pulling and everyday use. I'll switch to the ten plys for offroad. $400CAN compared to $2500Can and a pile of work. Pulled like a champ with 235-70-16 SUV tires. 5th gear, AC on driving some of the flat sections. Pretty satisfied with the results. Thanks all!
